FSX becoming unresponsive (no CTD)

Recommended Posts

Hello,
id like to know if anyone else has suggestions on dealing with another issue I have: after longer flights, usually before or during approach, my FSX has a tendency to either hang for 1-3 minutes, or become completely unresponsive. I can still hear the sound and switch to the task manager, but I cannot access any menus and the only solution is to kill FSX in the TM. CPU usage is shown at 100% on the cores I assigned FSX to (3-8) also VAS is not reaching any limits, but even if I wait there is nothing happening anymore.

A bit of system information:

AMD 8350 @ 4,4 Ghz
16 GB RAM
Gainward Phantom 970, 4GB
Win7 64bit
FSX Acceleration installed on Samsung 1TB SSD.

No tweaks in FSX.cfg except Highmemfix, Affinitymask and PoolSize=0.

I suspect something sends my CPU into a calculation loop, but I have no clue what exactly that process could be.

Any programs running in the background?  Surfing porn sites while flying?  (one guy actually confessed to that a few years ago!).  I would hope your web browser is shut down.

I used to get that in FSX (now on FSX:SE) and it was the window focus that was a problem. A quick Alt-Enter, twice, always brought things back. Worth a try if it’s the same issue?

Best regards

Rupert

@ charliearon

I have a laptop and a pretty attractive girlfriend so....nope. 😄

@ CB_Pilot

well, when I try to do that the screen just stays black. The only way out is the windows key or CTRL, ALT and DEL. I just updated my graphics driver, lets see....

Ok, let me add this: she also still seems to consider me attractive. 😄

Enable all cores.  You cannot assign FSX to just cores 3 thru 8.  FSX was developed in 2006 and developers had no idea whatsoever what a core was when FSX was released.

If you have ANY tweaks in your FSX.cfg, get rid of them.  See the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide.

Well i will definitely give it a try to put 255 in my affinitymask but the load distribution coretemp and process monitor are showing me clearly indicates that FSX works on the 5 cores I assigned it to.

I just had the same issue again, real air duke, descending into heavy load scenery area, but with good FPS until it stops. ALT + Enter doesnt do anything, mouse cursor is moving, engine sound playing. Pushing windows button brings up the start menu and turns the rest of the screen black.

I thought its pretty much  considered common sense to use AM in your FSX.cfg, as removing it kills my performance by at least 10FPS. Same goes with Highmemfix, it should be in any cfg, or not? I do not have an Intel 5Ghz like you do, and If I had such a machine, I'd never see the insides of a real airliner anymore. 😉

Have you given any thought to putting AI sliders to zero and then flying into your high density area to see if it is AI aircraft causing your problem?

If that is your UTLive traffic settings, you will run out of memory 100% of the time.  In fact, I have mine set at 20% for airliners and get the out of memory crashes 100% of the time.  Almost instantly, if you have FSUIPC installed, you'll get the ding, ding sound indicating your sim is about to run out of memory.  I get the message about running out of memory first before the sim closes instantly.  When I did a search for "how to disable UTLive for FSX" (because FSX will use the same settings as P3D), some say, hit Ctrl+Shift+T, and that will disable UTLive.  It does not.  I still have UTLive aircraft at gates at KSEA.  At KDCA 4-5 gates still have the AI (some could be static aircraft from WashX) but this does significantly provide me with more VAS (a little over 1GB instead of 200-500MB's).  Personally I would like to use the default AI with FSX but UTLive forces me to use their program.  I like UTLive in P3DV4 but UTLive makes using FSX almost unplayable as there is not even the default AI.  I suspect there are not many who still use FSX so it is not a concern.  I have FSX installed only to help others who might be having issues with it and for updating the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide.

I do not see how UTLive can work in FSX.  If someone has a solution, I would be interested in hearing about it as well as the OP.  I have manually edited the exe.xml to stop UTLive from loading.  I even gave FSX a fake drive in the UTLive settings in the main UTLive directory.

I am going to uninstall UTLive v1200 and just use the default AI as no add-on program is going to dictate my simming preferences.

Well I dont know, I consider 40% pretty cautious but yes, I occassionally have OOMs and live with them until FS2020 comes up. 😉 I usually only get the warning chime of fsuipc on approach after a 10 hour overnight flight and my usual reaction is to switch off AI traffic via the provided hotkeys. I also had this problem when I was still using WoAi traffic so I guessed I had to live with it.

Using the QW787s provided nice VAS gauge, I usuall have a high usage of VAS until after takeoff, where it drops to like 60% and stays there until on final approach the destination airport gets loaded.

So far i didnt have the original problem again, ill report back when it happens.
