How Do You Use The EFB?

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded from the PMDG 737 NGX to the NGXu, and yes I call it an upgrade for a number of reasons.  But the feedback I would like to get is if or how you are using the electronic flight bag?  I have spent a considerable amount of time reading the entire manual and getting to know the EFB as well as the ACARS functions in the FMS.  So I am comfortable with HOW to use it, I'm just not sure why I should or if I am gaining anything.  The realism and further immersion is nice, but unless I'm missing something the only things that seem somewhat useful for me are calculating a temperature and derate using the assumed temp method and possibly more accurate V speeds than what the FMS calculates.  I do not use the charts feature because I have Navigraph charts displayed on a full size screen at all times which is much more convenient than viewing charts on the EFB.  So back to my question, do you use it and if so, how?

Similarly, I only use the EFB in the NGXu for performance calculations. I have an iPad and second monitor for charts. Also, there's a noticeable performance penalty for keeping the EFB on. And panning/zooming charts produces another performance drop and stuttering.

I have my complany's realworld EFB for charts and performance caluculation... so the NGXU's one are mostly for moving map and Performance for the airport not in our realworld route.

Actually, the most handy part for EFB's OPT is the landing distance cauculation for select Autobrake, but there is a bug in NGXu's autobrake that brake way too hard now....

The advantage of charts in the EFB is surely tat you DON'T have to have a separate chart display or to leave the sim to find and look at them.

As a long time user of Aivlasoft's Electronic Flight Bag running on a separate PC on a 27" screen I have no need for the inbuilt EFB in the NGXu.

I generate a plan using PFPX and import it into EFB. I then add a SID and STAR and save the whole route as a separate file. That file is then loaded into Radar Contact 4 for ATC. Perfect!

EFB can then be used to show a route to the take-off runway and at the other end the route from the runway to the selected gate.

I agree with you Ray, I too have been using Aivlasoft since its initial releases, in v1 and now v2, and run it on a separate PC and screen. So none of the newly released airplanes with EFB have any appeal whatsoever compared to this wonderful piece of well supported software. This is perhaps one of the most underestimated tool for flight simulation since it can be used with ANY aircraft without having to fumble with different sets of charts during critical phases of the flight, and virtually no impact on the performance of your simulator.
