Some questions regarding the weather

Featured Replies

Good morning everyone,

If one of these have been discussed before, please excuse. But after reading alot of forums, watching alot of clips and so on, i still have  one or two questions regarding some weather aspects in MSFS.

Maybe one of the testers can answer them if allowed?

First of all would be how MSFS deals or depicts temperature inversions? We all know this can be a really cool sight in real life and i wonder if this will be the case in the Sim too?

Second one is more of an observation than a question...on every Screenshot i saw that shows overcast clouds, they look very greyish from above. For my taste and experience a little bit too greyish. Shouldnt they be more whiteybright especially from above?

At third i wonder how an overcast stratus or cirrus layer would look like since i have the impression that every Screenshot is showing more or less Cumulus/ CBs  in different Shapes.

Wondering about all those other different cloud types too (Altocumulus,Stratocumulus,Lenticularis and so on...)too.

So if any tester can enlighten me on one of these i'd really happy.

Thanks in advance and stay healthy everyone,

Tom

They say the engine is able to simulate all cloud types. So I guess we haven't seen quite a lot of them yet or that was quite a bold statement. I'd be more than curious to see some lenticulari, CB anvils and others.

As for inversions, they say at least the clouds are made up of 32 individual layers. Probably they meant the entire athmospheric system, but they only said clouds. If we assume that each layer might have their own temperature, humidity, pollution and other data, one could think that inversions are there, at least data-wise. If however we'll be visually able to see something like this, which you probably mean, we don't know. I can't recall to have seen any shot with a pronounced and visible inversion effect. Few more weeks until we can find out ourselves.

I wouldn't worry too much about the colour of clouds based on 1 screenshot. I don't think many of us have studied clouds long enough to know what they should really look like even when you look at clouds in real life if you look at them long enough they appear strange and "fake" at times.

That's right. Nevertheless, took these two a few days ago and it made me wonder even for the more basic cloud types of which we've seen a lot, if we'll get this fine definition they often show. Let alone the halo. 😅 They can do physically correct rainbows, I wonder why that's not gonna make it apparently... 🤣

Hi Tom and welcome

Excellent questions and remarks. I am now the only one not in the alpha but that shoudl not prevent me to say something. Would it 😉 ?

Inversion. We saw a rather spectacular timelag clip on San Francisco with the layer of fog above the ocean and clearer weather above. Saw that many times when I was living in Marin Cy and driving on the GGB to downtown. So the weather engine handles temperature inversion or so it seems.

I agree with you that the overcast looks often very greysish, dull from above. Not in all the shots though. The jury is still out on that one. Extremely good light from below the overcast.

These might answer some questions:

I'm still not in it neither 😅

I'm not in the alpha and have no interest in it.  When it's ready, I'll try it.

Hello guys,

So thanks for the replies! I'm really looking forward to see it next month. :)

Just working through some of the new footage. Am I missing something. In the IFR episode it was said that "ceilings and RVR" could be set precisely for effective IFR training. To this day I have not seen any setting for visibility, let alone RVR. So again, am I missing something? And no, I have not seen all the footage yet so maybe it's somewhere and I haven't seen it, but I doubt it.
