The fact that Vatsim is partnered with Microsoft Flight Simulator, I am curious to know If additional software will be needed, (especially for voice communication), 

Does this mean I can start a VFR flight anywhere in the world at any time, and expect full coverage from startup to shutdown?

 

I had membership with Vatsim years ago but quit using it because of the sporadic coverage, and times.

Just wondering what to expect.

it works the same way as before. Download vPilot. Register your flight. Same coverage, same service.

I’m new to all this so forgive the noob question... with this service are you actually talking to a live person?

Can everyone see each other? Is it like a massive multiplayer session?

Yes if the controllers are online, you talk to an actual person.You have to use proper clearance, file a flight plane ( never done VFR ), etc... There are maps available to let you see if they are online. It's been so long for me,

You have to fly according to real world rules, but in a sense it is like multiplayer only that there are other pilots flying all over the world. Best thing to do is look at a VATSIM map showing the controllers and pilots.

You won't be able to hear anything unless you download the connection software like vPilot, spawn in a parking area ( NOT on the runway ), tune into the frequency, etc... Watch some YouTube videos on it. It can be very real feeling and fun, but you have to be serious about what you are doing and pay attention to the rules of VATSIM.
