October 25, 200619 yr I can't take credit for this as others have posted it in this forum.Try flying in winter/summer/spring and look at the landclass/textures.Some have said that at this time of the year, in certain areas of the world, being Autumn, that the "desert" look is actually the brown/dormant grass.JerryG
October 25, 200619 yr The thing is the gras almost never gets brown here. Especialy not during fall. Its green it might be muddy but that would show as bright green with very dark brown streaks. However if I look at what FS-X shows I see light brown dryed out land.
October 25, 200619 yr Author They are right, it is simply the autumn grass texture.I agree though...for a lot of places, the autumn grass texture is too sandy brown colored. But I guess for other places, like the western USA, things dry out so much in the autumn that the grass does indeed turn brown. Yellow-brown for Colorado, in fact. I think MS tried to compromise here with this texture. I'm sure replacements will be around eventually.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
October 25, 200619 yr Landclass definitions for the entire world are defined in worldlc.bgl which is located in the FSXSceneryBASEScenery folder. The BGL file can be opened with the TmfViewer app which is included in the Terrain SDK. TmfViewer displays the landclass code for the area under the mouse cursor. Enormous areas of the western US and Canada are coded 51 (Semi-Desert Shrubs) and especially 52 (Semi-Desert Sage). These seem to be the main cause of the widespread desert, in North America at least. There are even areas with these semi-desert codes in Newfoundland.

October 26, 200619 yr WellI've played FSX just acouple of times flying from Milan airport and I have to tell you that also the Padana valley around Milan it's more like a desert than to a "green" big valley.I've also tried to change the season (flying in july and october) but the result is the same.Do you think there should be a bug on textures connected to seasons? Thanks
October 26, 200619 yr When flying around Colorado, there are vast swaths of desert. Colorado is considered to be a semi-arid climate, but there are too many portions here that are large Sahara desert-like areas. I haven't flown around anywhere else much yet, but I hear the problem apparently exists in in many areas of the globe.Regarding Colorado, even worse is...The Rockie Mountains are not rocky at all on the peaks, now they are the Sandy Mountains(for the peaks, and some lower areas of them are deserts too). Apparently, it's a landlcass issue/problem, or perhaps it's a landclass issue in cunjuction with some texture issues. I'm not technically inclined enough to say with authority.I feel that FSX has a lot of nice new things to like about it. My biggest gripe/disappointment with it, is this issue.Personally, I feel this is a pretty glaring issue and I would like to see MS/ACES fix this. If you feel the same way then I have a recommendation, make a list of things that you like about the new version of Flight Sim, and a list of things that you are disappointed with and any bugs you may have found. Then write them an e-mail written in diplomatic fashion of your listed items. If you feel as I do, that this is one of the most glaring issues and your biggest disappointment with the sim and you would like to see them address it, then make sure you let that be known in the e-mail, diplomatically. Send it [email protected],Jim

October 26, 200619 yr Downloaded it (beta version for 2004) yesterday and flew a hop from Nebraska to KDEN. I think that by being more precise about the land distribution (still miss the irrigation circles...), it reduces the proportion of "desert sage" and hence the sahara look. The color is still a problem that I'm sure someone will fix eventually. The problem as I see it is that the yellow might be about accurate under direct sunlight and for grass fields but not for ranch-land which, as I look through my kitchen window, is more brownish with greenish streaks when there is a little water and occasional greyish streaks. This in fact brings up another problem, which is that the color of the ground does change depending on the amount of light it receives... Go fix that!No question as far as I'm concerned, however, FSX is a very significantly improved version and, I am told, a better platform for further significant improvements. There are (finally!) some Fly! reminiscences here...
