Phew! Full IFR approach in IMC.

Recommended Posts

I was finally able to do a full IFR approach in the cessna 172 just like in fsx. I wasn't sure MSFS2020 had all the (old school) navigation capabilities of fsx but rest assured it does...at least in the cessna.

GPS/NAV mode/ OBS/ NAV 1, NAV 2, VOR/ILS frequencies/ autopilot, APR, capture glide slope automatically etc...all good:)

I haven't tried NDB navigation yet.

Btw if you want to find ILS frequencies just zoom into the destination airport on the map page and you will see the ILS antenna icons at each end of the runway...if the runway has ILS.

I do miss the classic radio stack...doing the VOR/ils frequencies on the glass panel is tedious but will be better in VR.

Just one thing...how do you display DME?

Load approach to GPS  via PROC and it will give you precise distance

I could be mistaken, but I think I read somewhere that DME wasn’t working at the moment (I’m talking about the traditional DME, not gps type)

Oh ya thanks...I guess I can do it with the garmin. I had my approach selected but then changed runways and didn't want to bother changing it ..it's so small to read and tinker with...I think flying in VR has spoiled me. 🙂

I typically don't use the Garmin on the Cessna...like to navigate all by VOR and gauges.

In fsx you would get DME on the radio stack...or at least on the saitek radio panel.

Ya that’s what I was referencing with the traditional DME, again it’s just what I read that is wasn’t functional(I’ve read a lot about this sim and could be mistaken) Also I think the direct to function on the gps doesn’t work unless you have a flight plan set, I don’t think you can put a new waypoint and select direct to.

DME is thing of the past. I used to have installed in my airplane (IRL), but 7 years ago I have removed after installation GNS430W which gives way more than DME!

Yes at the moment GNS and G1000 are broken. You can't select kayoing and press Direct To. However, work around is to press Direct To and dial waypoint manually, then it works

But old school DME/VOR navigation is a lot more fun!

Oh really! I didn’t know that, thanks for that Bit of info. I’ll give it a try!

Yeah this! Now I have to rely on intersecting radials instead of DME when I don’t want to use the GPS 😞

Ya it’s fun to use a map and figure out exactly where you by dialing in 2 VORs and getting the intersecting course!! Man I miss that, I was too much into airliners in p3d but now with msfs 2020, it’s reignited GA flying for me!

And people said the days of /u were a thing of the past! It is a pain, but seriously great practice to stay ahead of the plane.

The analog 172 (which is not in the standard version) has a standalone DME.

The glass cockpit 172 will display DME too. Click on the PFD softkey on the bottom pilot’s display, where you will get additional options to enable various overlays such as wind. From here you can enable the display of DME distance from either Nav 1 or Nav 2 (but not both). There is another soft key marked DME, which is where you select which Nav radio (1 or 2) will be used for the display. This menu is also where you tune the ADF.

Where does the analog one display DME? Can’t seem to find it. I see a distance / CRS box on the left of the GPS, but it’s blank even when I’m tuned into a VOR with DME on my NAV 1.

Not yet it isn't...what are you going to do if your gps craps out and there's no ATC to save your butt?...and besides there is so much more to flying than following a magenta line...VORs...NDBs "Mary had roast beef Mary barfed" etc...you haven't flown if you've never plotted a course using a sectional map...used your to E6B to calculate for wind corrction...traingulated your position using only VORs.. or landed in the fog using only your radio. I swear FSX pilots for real word training should be required reading for simmers...they should make a 2020 edition!
