If the app is still running and hasn't completely crashed, move your mouse and click in the middle of the main display to give it focus then press a key.

They need to get rid of the phrase 'press any key to start'.

This. It's literally the dumbest thing anyone wasted time on implementing.

Has anyone in the life of a stupid screen like this said to themselves "Thank god that screen was there.. I was not, despite launching the game, ready to start yet.. What a life saver!"

Pressing the mouse does it for me -why?

Only Microsoft knows!

Keys don't seem to work for me but pressing the right mouse button does.

Your window may not have focus. Click in the window and then press a key.

And I agree with styckx, it's like some kind of strange MS-DOS style flashback, "Insert Floppy Disk 2 and press a key when ready".
