Looks like everything is in Community Directory - Yay!!!

Featured Replies

Hey,

From what I can tell and with my addons - looks like everything is in the community folder.  Orbx does it better just symlinks it.  Thank God, finally all the addons are outside the darn sim root directory.  I still hope addon developers for P3D will learn external installations cuz some of them are just flat out lazy to change installers (Some major scenery guys and plane makers still do not learn - those sceneries guys will not get any more $$$ from me)

I am glad MSFS2020 Team has taken a solid approach to this and I guarantee you guys that making backups will be easy to manage especially when sim updates happen etc.

Cheers to the new addon system.

Thanks

. . .and what is wrong the the word not allowed sim root?

I say - Community Directory - is the perfect place for mods. It's a safe place, a quarantine - if you don't like it - you can bin it, etc?

What's not to like.

I hate the fact the ORBX are entrenching themselves deep in to the folder structure of the MSFS - they're certainly not going to do that to my Install.

The problem with loading up in sim root is a total time waste.

If sim gets destroyed by an update...you have to uninstall the whole sim again and start all over again.  I can whack P3Dv5 completely and just put the addons (by dragging them) in the respective addon folder etc and viola everything works.  For example - new update for sim comes, and all I just do is move all the directories out of p3dv5 addon and to say backup folder - it takes 1 second.  Uninstall p3dv5.x and install it back, and just drag the addons back to the directory.  Everything loads up fine.

You are telling that isn't efficient...and what about post where the devs says it isn't my addon it is the sim; go contact LM and then you contact LM and they say it is the addon etc.  In sim root, some addon products have inside global texture directory, effects directory all over the sim directory - 100% total mess.

Orbx hasn't put anything outside the Community folder.  They are just symlinking the directories from third location into the community folder - kinda like what Xplane does anyway.

Imho Orbx kinda made the sim anyway - their stuff is all over the original sim (they were involved from the beginning anyway).  Go to default LOWI - the same stairs are used in the LOWI addon package also.

I am happy for now MSFS is forcing all to go community folder.  I wish LM could enforce rules like that but this thread is about MSFS and I am very happy with the new approach

Definitely agree with the above. I love how managing mods and 3rd party fixes is kept away from the main install. This makes it so much easier to manage. It's okay about P3D, since I don't even use that sim anymore, and I'm about to delete it off my computer for good. So glad to finally be fully invested and focused on one sim that outshines them all. Gone are those days of endless tweaking and worrying about scenery ordering and messing with cfg files, deleting shaders, having to make sure our scenery is ordered correctly, on and on and on...
