Its nothing more than a glorified bing map vfr video game at this point. Just to give some contrast to this negative analysis, after using 'simulators' for going on 40y now MSFS, even in it's infancy, is miles ahead of anything before it. The atmospherics are stellar, and flying thru photo real 3D scenery adds a level of realism you won't find in P3D until you spends hundreds of dollars making it decent, and then you get to spend hours upon hours installing, updating, maintaining, configuring, reading countless threads to address all of its various issues. I'm using mostly the TBM930 and its flight model is decent, turbulence is modeled far better than in anything I've used in countless hours in P3D in PMDG/Majestic ware. Having spent years using FSCaptain in P3D I follow the same behaviors to try to make perfect flights and I have the identical experience I've had using P3D in this manner--it has trained me well. To the OP--unless you just really need something to look forward to, I'd install that bad boy now and enjoy it for what it is, which is nothing short of revolutionary, and it's just getting started. The very hard part is already done--and done incredibly well. It will slowly and steadily improve in depth over the coming 1-2y, but for now I find it incredibly satisfying in ways not possible in P3D unless you're willing to pay and install TruEarth in its limited areas, and with its massive storage requirements. It's just a rumour though so take it with a huge grain of salt. Personally I think they will want to port the engine to DirectX 12 before releasing the game to console. they did talk of a BIG update during the last Q&A - could DX12 be it? seem too soon, imo it's 12+ months away - sort the major bugs out first. DirectX 12 is going to be a major change to the engine so it could be that. I don't know exactly how the porting process works, but I think it might be wiser to proceed with the DirectX 12 update before improving anything in the current renderer, which could be broken again later. I think the development of the console version will dictate this roadmap, and hopefully they will have more to say in the upcoming Q&A.

Xbox is using DX12 and the game launching on that platform is only a couple months away. And if you look in the games install directory you may notice "GFSDK_Aftermath_Lib.x64.dll" which may strongly indicate that they are working on dx12.
September 22, 20205 yr Quite frankly the current renderer seems balanced about as it should be vis a vis CPU v GPU load balancing. My now rather lowly RTX 2070 Super is fairly easily brought to its knees, whereas the 9900K is literally coasting thru dense complex scenery. But this I'm convinced is in large part due to running vsync to a 30Hz screen. I don't think DX12 will hurt it, but it just hardly seems necessary. That may not be true for those after greater than 30 frames unsynced.
