How to shift MSFS (from MS store) to new SSD?

Featured Replies

Would a reinstall be the only possibility? Uninstall the sim and then do a complete reinstall? Or is there another simpler possibility to just move folders maybe?

Thx, Karl

I see that under Windows > Settings > Apps There is an option to move the installation. Not sure if that does what you are looking for as I have not clicked on it.

If you installed the whole simulator ( App and Content ) using the default location, then yes, that option to move the app in the Windows setting will work just fine.

Instead, if you opted ( at install time ) to install the Content ( which it takes most of the space ) in a separate folder, it's probably easier to create a new folder on the other drive, let's say you call it E:\MSFS, and use Windows Explorer to MOVE ( cut and paste ) the "Community" and "Official" folder under there so, you'll end up like this:

E:\MSFS\Community

E:\MSFS\Official

Then, go in the folder up above the Community folder and open the "CONTENT.OPT" file with Notepad or another text editor and find the last line, which contains a command like this:

InstalledPackagesPath ( then a space, then the path of the current Content )

And change it to the new drive location so, following the previous example, it should be like this:

InstalledPackagesPath "E:\MSFS"

Note the double quotes around the path and the space after the InstalledPackagesPath. Save the file, and you should be good to go.

The CONTENT.OPT is located here, if you have the MS Store version:

%LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

Or here, if you have the Steam version.

%APPDATA\Microsoft Flight Simulator

Do you still need a pagefile on the disk you move it to? I had FS2020 installed on another drive and had lots of CTD which 99% of went away when i moved it back to the C drive

tried that since I also got an SSD for MSFS and the move starts but comes to an end after some time with an error message like "MSFS could not be moved successfully, please try it again later. Error code 0x80073d0b." Well, and now? Already tried a second time "later" and same error....

EDIT tried to move my MSFS installation (that one with the packages folders) manually (to sent edit the config path) but then got the error the "packages" could not be moved due to some missing rights?!

EDIT2: all too late, deinstalled MSFS and will now do a clean re-install on new SDD

Thank you all, once the new SSD arrives I will try and see how it goes.

I have the MS Store version and “moved” my installation to a different SSD. It did, in fact move the bulk of the content to the secondary SSD. It looks like it is still referenced to the primary install drive (in this case my C Drive) via symbolic links. It took me a while to figure out where the community folder was. They should probably make it easier to find and access that folder in particular.
