Saitek trim wheel not seen in Axis and Oh's

Featured Replies

Hi

Should this show up? I am trying to assign elevator trim but cannot. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

not sure, that device hasn't bee requested before. Which one is it exactly? And does it show as a Windows USB Game Controller?

If it isn't registered as a Game Controller, it won't show up in AAO. I would have to write a connector for it - but I would need your help, since I don't have the device. If you want, send me an email to the address on the last page of the manual.

Best regards

Hello,

I have reviewed the device manual online, and it says that the Saitek Trim Wheel is supposed to show up as a normal joystick axis. So you would go to the left panel in AAO and instead of selecting an axis event at the top, choose "AXIS_ELEV_TRIM_SET" in the Event list right below, then spin the wheel - AAO should be able to see it, when Windows can see it.

Best regards

The Saitek trim wheel act as a button rather than an axis in other assignment software. It send repeated button depress signal to increase or decrease the trim level. So normal you dont see this in the axis user interface.

Maybe there are different versions of this device? The official users manual suggests that it is treated as a joystick axis? Or does that only happen when you install the proper driver from Saitek?

Setup in Flight Sim X and Flight Sim 2004

The Trim Wheel has only one axis, but this axis needs to be configured. Due to the way in which Flight Sim detects the pedals, they need to be correctly configured before you can start getting the most out of them. • Start by opening FSX and clicking to Settings > Controls > Control Axes (in FS2004 go to Settings > Assignments > Joystick Axes). Select the Pro Flight Trim Wheel in the Controller Type menu (Joystick Type for FS2004). • Double-click the event called Elevator Trim Axis and move the Trim Wheel when the Change Assignment window appears. Trim Wheel will appear in the Notification window, and then click OK. Now that the trim axis is set, go to the settings page called Calibration (Sensitivities in FS2004). Select the Trim Wheel and then select Advanced Controls. Ensure that the sensitivities for the trim axis are set to 100% and that the null zone is set to 0%.

But I don't have one of those Cessna Trim Wheels, so I can't check it myself. And there don't seem to be any on sale in my country either.

That being said, the trim wheel on the MultiPanel indeed acts as a button. Kind of, since it is not a joystick at all. It requires special code to access it as a HID device.

I have the Saitek Cessna Trim Wheel and I can confirm that AAO can't seem to find it. It's a HID device and can be used as an Axis. It's axis Identifier however is TRIM and not X,Y,Z,RY. I used DIView from bodnar and it also shows the Trim as an axis. It can't be used as a button. But the movement of the axis is very slow, by design, so it could be that AAO expects a reaction or change within a certain timeframe?

Every joystick is a HID device, I think. The question is, if it is missing only because the device uses a special "axis code" that my library doesn't know, or if it is really only a HID device, and not picked up for example in the Windows USB Game Controller panel.

Writing a HID device interface is easy, but I need the device IDs and the values that are sent when the wheel moves. There is no written spec for the Saiteks, so my only chance is to query the actual hardware when it is connected to a computer. But the Trim Wheels are unavailable here, so I need somebody who has it to work with me and run a debug version of AAO to gather the required data. So if an owner of that Trim Wheel would be willing to help, that would be great. Just send me an email to the address on the last page of the user manual.

Btw. AAO writes a log of all the devices that it finds. I will need that file too.

Edit: I just read that Windows sometimes doesn't recognize the wheel, it must be turned a couple of times before it shows up as a Windows USB Game Controller?

Many thanks in advance and best regards

Yes, that seems to be the case. The trim wheel shows up as a normal joystick axis, but you can't turn it fast or far enough for AAO to recognize the movement on the Add Axis / Change Axis dialogs.

In the next AAO version 1.74 there will be an option to isolate a specific joystick device on that dialog, and that device will then be queried in "high resolution" mode, like in normal AAO operations. That will pick up every movement, however small.

Many thanks for the pointer!

Best regards

Still having a problem with mine.

A and Ohs picks up the Saitek Trim Axis and allows me to configure it... but once I pause the sim it loses it... unpacking then means it is no longer recognised.
