Will FedEx force the pilots to use the AP? (facepalm)

The distance between the two cities might be 18 miles, but in reality, the flight is much longer.

Yes, only because the the airliner has to line up on the ILS from about 20 miles away, nicely stable and established. No hot-dogging fighter pilot shenanigans for a break and visual landing, even if CAVOK IMHO.

Still beats the socks of dozens of semi's stuck in the traffic queue for 10 hours or so at the border..

Looks like the SID from Tijuana requires aircraft to cross the US border over the sea, instead of overland.

That’s pretty interesting, no downtime on that flight!

You'd think airlines don't ferry a/C for maintenance.  Ie ba and virgin (before lgw closed)  from LHR TO LGW and vice versa. Commonly known as a ferry.

Same as easy / tom/ ryr etc etc  doing position to operate sectors due AOGs at a base  for example.  Hence being called a 'positioner' Two different types of flights.

LTN STN

Man lpl

Lgw ltn stn

All are the same 15 min flights

Etc etc etx.

Ferries / positioners  Are common place every single day. Just the unqualified spotters don't realise it happens.

hell airlines even use specific callsigns for it.  9xxx and 8xxp for example at easy and virgin for example.

It was always a good interview question for ops to ask the candidate what's the difference between a 'ferry' and a 'positioning' sector is.  Then get them to explain it.

It's a question that sorts the men from the boys in my game to see how detailed an answer and what example they give.

A valid and informative argument, fluffy. (Great new (old) avatar BTW!). I suppose a difference is that the FedEx flight (hopefully!) earns revenue both ways rather than making a flight which will ultimately earn revenue on a future leg. If I've understood a positioner correctly. As you know I'm not a real pilot or a dispatcher

In summer we flew positioning sectors to cover seasonal MCOs

Lgw man lgw

Man bfs man

Gla man gla

 Bfs gla bfs

As well as the sectors in the Caribbean that John has mentioned. We still do with bgi, anu, gnd   etc etc  All of these are 'positioning' sectors because there is a revenue sector after it.

As well as the short Lhr/Lgw flights and lhr ams,  zsam, eddf in the past for C and D checks and heavy maintenance.   Those would be a 'ferry' sectors.

Now you know, for when you get asked the difference between a ferry and positioning flight.  😁
