MIP Setting in FSX

Featured Replies

Thanks for the info Stuart. I seriously doubt the "tweak" actually improves anything though. I have no FSX tweaks and my scenery looks just as good, if not better, than the screenshot shown at the link (in fact the shot looks pretty fuzzy in places - not sharp at all in my eyes)(I have FS Genesis Mesh Scenery installed so maybe that's why my scenery looks better). I doubt the several subcontractors working for the ACES Team missed this line in the FSX config. I have the Mipmap Detail slider on my high end ATI video card set to MAX (Quality) and that works great for me. Perhaps older video cards are not able to control this detail as well as today's cards and the "tweak" suggested at that site will actually work for older cards (but then I think MS would have included this line for older cards when FSX was first set up). May I suggest going to http://www.tweakguides.com and checking out the tweakguide for gamers as well as the ATI and NVIDIA videocard tweakguides? You might find a few suggestions on improving your visual enjoyment of FSX. Again, thanks for the link. It might actually work for some!Best regards,JimYoung

Meanwhile, I actually tried it. I can't say I liked it, but I'm still stuck with the demo for about another 1 and a half weeks or so. Anyway, I got shimmering trees and the distant water shimmer around large ships (running water at 2x Mid) was just going nutz. The observation that it may work for some based on their cards is likely correct, but wasn't needed here as I also have MIP control adjusted where it needs to be in my vid card.Always helps to hear of a potential tweak tho...thanks.

That looks like custom add-on scenery.

The scenery in the screenshot was I think the new UK VFR Photographic Generation X, without autogen. The original VFR Photo scenery for FS9, always suggested setting mip levels to at least 5 in the sim. Since this slider had disappeared in FSX, and presume the default may be set somewhat lower, this tweak helps sharpen photographic textures. As was the case in FS9, turning the mip slider up to 6 effected the shimmering of autogen trees etc. and fps even in FS9. I would suggest that it may be worth trying this line in the FSX.cfg with a setting of say 4, if using autogen and maybe 6 if not.I got the impression from the original post, that MS had left this adjustable factor out of FSX (hence no slider in settings) and by adding the line to the cfg, does in fact make a difference. How it will effect the sim on indivduals machines may depend on their own circumstances. I know in FS9 that by setting the mip slider to 4 gave optimum visuals v's performance.Perhaps one of the ACES team that are more knowledgable in this area can clarify things regarding this cfg setting.

Yack!!!This setting was for me a timemachine back to fs9-ati-shimmering-havoc-land!Your intentions are surely good, but this one is only for those who fly over photoscenery w/o autogen ...Eagle

Sorry that it didn't help. Unfortunately I don't have FSX myself yet (my children I believe are putting it in my Xmas stocking), but meanwhile I am accumulating all the tweaks I can so that I may benefit from the knowledge build up.Just thought this may be worth trying. Have you tried it at different values e.g. 3, 4, 5, 6. It maybe of course that FSX is defaulted to a low value, in order to remove the shimmering effects, but at the expense of texture clarity especially away from the close area around the aircraft.Cheers,Stuart

I just tried setting it to 4 like I had it in FS9! I'd have to do a little more testing but I think it gave me a couple of more frames! Nothing drastic, but in FSX every little bit counts!! It's certainly worth a try! Right now at KATL with 100% UT traffic, Autogen set to dense (although tweaked), scenery set to extremely dense, textures 1m, mesh 19m, I'm now getting an average of 14 FPS. Before it was closer to 11 or 12 FPS. At altitude it jumps to over 25 fps, the higher I get. This is on par with what I see in FS9 with a detailed aircraft, like the LDS 767. The aircraft I use in FSX is the Overland series. I still don't think FSX has the capability to adequately support these type of aircraft. The aircraft I use in FSX is the Overland series. It seems to be a good compromise for FSX! My system is a P4 3.8 ghz 2GB with a 7800GT 256 Mb card.

Thanks

>What line are you adding?>I do not remember how it was in FS9.Add the line MipBias=6, so it looks like this (substitute square brackets where appropriate): MipBias=6Mode=1024x768x326 is the setting the OP suggested, I've tried 5 and 4 with no real diference. No shimmering here unless I set filtering to anisotropic, so I use bilinear with works well for me.No real FPS increase here after the tweak, but certainly sharper textures and less blurries.Anyway, FSX is a strange beast tweaking-wise, what works for someone may have opposite effects for someone else. I have a hard time getting consistent result from session to session on my rig ;)Pietro.
