Cockpit-related glitch with Oculus Rift

Featured Replies

The sim works with my Oculus Rift. Despite my low-end PC (i5 6600, GTX 1060) frame rates aren’t too bad even on high-ish settings. However I do have one annoying problem - I can’t move relative to the cockpit. I can rotate my head to look at the scenery - that works fine - but if I shift backwards, forwards, left or right the cockpit simply moves with me. The cockpit also seems juddery and wobbly when I move. If I select an outside camera view there is no problem - because there is no cockpit! The only outside problems I have are occasional distortions of the scenery - and nearby wind turbine blades look bent and rubbery - but I could live with these.

To run MSFS I simply click the desktop icon, load the flight, put on my headset and press ctrl+tab. I often wonder whether I should be using Steam VR or OpenXR in some way. I tried using Steam VR once and it didn’t seem to make any difference.

Any thoughts?

It could simply be your gpu not keeping up. The strain on the hardware is probably higher in the cockpit which perhaps is why it's happening there and not in external views. Try lowering the settings and see if it goes away.

OpenXR runtime is part of the Oculus software, no need to install it again. You can switch to the Oculus Beta for the latest version if you haven't done so.

OK - many thanks for that info. I have downloaded the Oculus Beta updates as well.

Thanks for your reply. I've just tried setting everything to "low" or "off" and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Including render resolution and possible oculus super sampling? Those would be the factors affecting this, if it is indeed this. Just checking all possibilities...

Thanks - I had Oculus Tray Super Sampling at 1.0 and in-game Render Scale at 50. I guess that counts as “low”?

Yeah, that is pretty low. Alas, I don't know what else to suggest. I hope you find the solution

Thanks for your input anyway - much appreciated.

One more thing, if you haven't done this already, make sure you have the latest Oculus Home software by opting in to the beta test channel. This appears to have fixed many problems for others. You do that in the Home settings tab

Thanks - I had to do that to get it working at all. It does make a big difference.

So there is no need to regedit the Khronos Openxr entry in the registry? With the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1

set to

C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json

which could alternatively be pointed to some  steamvr  json file i read somewhere.

I did not. Mine was default like that.

Just to update this .....

Since I started this topic I’ve improved my flying experience in other ways - largely by setting Render Scale to 50 and Supersampling to 1.5. This seems (to my eyes) to produce a slightly better image than Render Scale = 100 and SS = 1 ..... and also better frame rates. This, combined with the fact that I now fly an ultralight with very little cockpit to speak of, has made me less bothered by the glitch. And it’s also set me thinking about whether this is a bug or a feature? After all, I set my cockpit view/position using the sliders under the “Camera” tab - so maybe they are meant to be fixed relative to the cockpit? That’s not how I remember it being in Aerofly however. In that sim you could have walked out along the wing if you’d had a big enough room. Which is it meant to be? Surely it’s more realistic to be able to lean to one side or forward to view something closer?

Typo

Hi,

Thanks for your input.!!

I have a 9700k at 4.8 and a 2080 super, so decent hardware I guess.

I also have this glitch in cockpit of a320. No matter how low the settings. I also have this in p3dv4 and p3dv5.

Do I need to install OpenXr or is this part of standard oculus software? I have the rift s..

Thanks

Happy flying!

Jozeff
