It annunciates when entering a runway for takeoff: “Entering runway 24 - 10,400 feet remaining”. It will alert if the runway is too short for the aircraft to safely takeoff, and will warn if the aircraft is trying to takeoff or land on a taxiway instead of a runway. On landing, it will alert if the aircraft is running out of remaining runway to stop safely. RAAS is not a default feature of an EGPWS. It is an extra-cost option. The development of RAAS was spurred primarily by the 2006 crash of Comair flight 5191, a CRJ that mistakenly tried to takeoff from a runway that was far too short at Lexington KY, and ran off the end before becoming airborne.
