Want advice if to get VR and if so which headset ?

Featured Replies

First I will cover the if question. A VR headset is very expensive so it has to offer me very much for me to spend the money. The flightsim I uses are MSFS P3D V5 XP11 and DCS. I might point out that I use track ir now. Does VR work fine in all these titles ?
Since it is such an expensive product I would also expect to enjoy it in other games. And from what I understand very few games support VR. At least I get that impression when looking at Steam.

So what can I expect from VR headset. My impression are the following correct me if I am mistaken

First of course a world in 3D which gives a completely new immersion factor.
The instruments are full realistic size instead of miniature version with a 2D screen.
It's easier to look around in the cockpit compared to Track Ir

I also have the impression that some disadvantages could be at hand

Resolution lower since image cover more space
Using hardware control can be a little more difficult since you cant see them
You can get problem with performance since more bits are to be handled. Which means you need to lower graphical settings in the simulator.

So it all comes down to does the advantage outweighs the disadvantages to such a degree that it is worth the money ?

If I decide to get VR which headset is best ? My own research lead me first to think about the HP Reverb G2.
But I have some concern mainly about performance,
My system is CPU Haswell 4770K @ 4.5 GHz RAM 16 Gb 2200 MHz Videocard NVIDIA 2070 Super 8 Gb SSD drives 2560*1440 screen.
I also have seen a review talking about problem using it with glasses and I use reading glasses now.
therefore I have been thinking about a Vive Cosmos
less resolution so better performance
no problem using it with glasses according to above mentioned review

Well, it looks like you answered your own questions 😜

Vr works perfectly fine in all the titles you mentioned. Xplane needs some additional add-ons like: rendering options, OVR tool.

P3dv5 works quite well in native vr.

Dcs is amazing in VR but does require you lowering some settings. Do you have a hotas joystick/throttle? You will need some good gaming device in vr.

I bought the rift cv1 in 2016 and was not overwhelmed mainly because of the gtx 970 I had at the time. Last year I got the rift s and a 2080 super and a 9700i processor and I'm very pleased with that. I was blown away at first but now the lower resolution is bothering me a bit. The immersion more than compensates that....I've not been flying 2d in more than 4 years. Turning to monitor feels ridiculous now, can't even look at it for 5 minutes...just mehh....

I have the feeling that your graphics card is better suited for VR headset like the rift s and not for the reverb.

The rift s is pretty plug and play (make sure you have the correct USB ports). The HP reverb takes quite a lot of tuning if I read al the forums correctly.

I have USB disconnection error every once in a while with the rift but usually it takes 5 minutes to reconnect the thing and het flying again.

Please let us know if you need more answers.

Cheers

There are plenty of other games to enjoy. Elite: Dangerous alone is worth the investment in a VR headset.

Your 16GB of RAM and 8GB 2070S isn't gonna be enough for MSFS in VR, even the default medium settings.

The minute you fly into areas like NYC,Miami,London....your system will suffer

You are looking at two very demanding factors on your hardware....the Reverb G2 and MSFS VR.

MSFS VR benefits greatly from 32+GB RAM and 11+GB VRAM, along with XP11(if you plan to go the ortho route)

The other titles will run fine...

Actually I have just got a HP Reverb G2 today and have just set it up. After that I need help to get it running correctly.

First I have only been able to see the flight sim view in a desktop window in a VR villa and it is not in 3D there either. Only the villa is 3D. How do I get full screen VR ?

XP11 I can't enable VR

P3D 5.1 after enabling VR I was told that I had run out of VRAM and I opted for resetting settings to default. After that I see a split view in 2d both on the screen and in the VR headset

DCS I don't get any 3D after enabling VR

But if I stay away from these very demanding areas ?

Island hopping in the Icon A5 and smaller prop planes are fine, and places without such dense scenery with only 8GB VRAM and 16GB RAM.

A320 and larger complex aircraft gonna make your hardware scream though guaranteed especially trying to drive the native res of a Reverb G2.
