Some technical cable questions

Featured Replies

I'm using a Jetline computer system (Intel 8th Gen Core i7 8700K - 4.8GHz 32GB Corsair DDR4 SDRAM 3000MHz with 850 Watt Corsair RM Power Supply) built for simming about 2 years ago, and I have a current LG 4K 32" monitor.  My Graphics card is an Nvidia 1080ti.  My primarily used sim is P3dv5.  I do use MSFS but less frequently.

My questions are these:

  • Is there really a difference  when it comes to performance whether I use a Display Port or HDMI cable connection?
  • Are there any significant differences in brands or performance of either type of the cables themselves?
  • Does it MATTER which DP input or HDMI (never mind. Only 1 HDMI on back of card) input I use on the back of the 1080ti?  There are 3 DP inputs on the card.

I do not use Gsync even though my monitor would support it.  I have never noticed any difference with it activiated.

Thanks. Your opinions and technical advice is appreciated.

Stan -- here is a good article about the difference -- https://www.tomshardware.com/features/displayport-vs-hdmi-better-for-gaming

Also, if you need excellent, high quality cables at a very reasonable price, see https://www.monoprice.com/

Hope this helps.

If you run 4K at 60 Hz refresh rate on the monitor, a high-quality HDMI cable is necessary--the el cheapos often won't carry the bandwidth without corrupting the signal.  I had a couple of the Monoprice cables that produced white snow-like sparkles on the display at 60 Hz, but worked fine at 30 Hz.  In general, shorter is better as well.  I've never had an issue with generic DP cables at 60 Hz, so perhaps the signal standard for those cables is different...or I just got lucky.

Excellent article.  Read the whole thing and it makes a lot of sense.  I do use DP right now and the article generally supports that if you have 1.4 (which I do).  It really does suggest turning on Gsync if you have it, so I will try that as well.  When I did use Gsync, I didn't really see any advantage, but I'll give it a go again.

Thanks for the information.

ps.  The article does mention something new in HDMI called “Premium High Speed” cables.  I will research that as well.

Premium High Speed

Before you spend money on fancy cables... your performance will not change (your original question)..

If you have visual problems on the screen, that may improve with better cables.

@spilok, use the cables supplied with your monitor. They are more than enough. I use the DP - HDMI cable supplied by BenQ and the image is fine. I can’t imagine LG would be any different.

Actually, P3d V5 is running quite well.  I just thought about this because I read an article regarding the ports on the back of the video card.  In an effort to always try to improve things (and I've been in the house constantly for over a year now, and have lots of time to experiment with my computer), I thought I'd see if other simmers have found something of which I'm unaware.

The reviews on Amazon for these 2.2 HDMI Premium High Speed Cables are quite impressive.  FIVE STARS!  Many say they have really moved information much faster and more precisely than generic cables that they happen to have received with various electronic pieces. Not really going to try one at this point, but the reviews sure make me think a little bit.  Tom's Hardware acknowledges the validity of these cables to some degree as well.  I've always heard, though, that there are no differences, except price, in most HDMI cables.  I have been using DP for years, but I thought I'd experiment with HDMI, and GSync.  The days I spend in the house, being retired, and away from my family and friends, keep me busy getting in and out of trouble with my flight sims. HA!

Stan,

Be wary of five star reviews on Amazon. People are paid or offered incentives to write them. Not for all products of course but more than you might imagine.

A DP-HDMI cable carries a digital signal. Unlike analogue it either works or it doesn’t. There’s no middle ground. If P3Dv5 is running well leave well alone. 😉

Yes, Ray.  I heard that!  I've been a customer of Amazon Prime for many years.  I'm often asked for a recommendation on a product, and I give one about 90% of the time.  I do follow up to see my recommendation to make sure it's exactly as I wrote it.  So far, all the right words were there as I'd written them.  I agree that reviews have to be read with a degree of caution.
