FSX Updates

Featured Replies

I am really confused. The issue is why are some companies of scenery and airplanes charging and some are just updating it for free. Carenado and Wilcopub for example is updating there planes for free and Megascenery is suppling a installer for free. On the other hand Captainsim, Eagelsoft and FSD are going to charge a fee to update the planes and a big fee it is. Why can some companies doing for free and other want to charge for it. They are basically the same planes that worked it FS9 and should the conversion be the same. If they are going to add new features than do in a different version but some of us just want to be able to fly the plane we bought orginally in FSX. I think some companies are trying to get us to pay twice for the same product when a small installer or change would have made the plane workable in FSX and they could have done it for free. So, the basicly question why can one company do for free while the others charge. I know who I will purchase my next add-ons from in the future (Hint...Hint The conpanies that did not charge for the conversions)

This topic has already been beaten to death before so I would suggest you do a search. The bottom line is this:If the addon works in FSX with minimal work from the developer, then chances are it will be free.If the addon requires significant programming changes to make it FSX compatible, then they will probably charge for it. It's simple economics really. You wouldn't do a lot of work for free would you?You purchased an addon that was for use in FS2004, no promises for FSX were ever made.

Why should anything be free!?Just be grateful when it is.And do use the search function, Saves a lot of time and repetitive posting. Especially when the volume of input means threads disappear from the first page real quick.Allcott

Just for the record . . . I updated the FSD Pilatus Porter to FSX at no cost whatever!A little fact checking will save you embarassment 8~)Regards,JackD

Nothing about the license states you can even use it in FSX.Aside from that, if the addon requires modifications to make it work in FSX... why should that work be unpaid? You're talking about companies, not charity organizations. How much work do you perform for free?

It depends on so many things--the size of the publisher, how complicated it would be to get the model to work in FSX, how much rewriting of the setup script, if there is one, is necessary and so on. Some of these payware places are a team of 2 or 3 people, some are big companies that can have coders working in groups etc, every case is different. From what I understand, as far as aircraft most late model add ons for FS2004 should work with FSX, with a bit of reworking, usually the setup script has to be rewritten to send the files to the correct folders. I don't know that much about actual plane creation, but, again, I've heard that, if it's an advanced, late model, once the files are in the right places it should work. Some publishers are "patching" their FS2004 planes, some are rewriting them for FSX.I have tried a few freeware planes that were "patched" so far, and they work OK; (from AvSim Libraries of course :)) I got a Lockheed Constellation and a Douglas DC6 (I have this weakness for gigantic 4 engine piston powered aircraft). The easiest ones, of course, have a "setup" script that copies everything where it needs to go for you; otherwiae you have to "unzip" the files to the correct folders youself; I got a Cessna 182 that I had to do that, and what will happen is, FS will ask you on start if you want to use the gauges etc, just answer yes several times and you're doneIt's easy to tell if the new plane is "FSX Compatible" once you've installed it-(1)You can choose it from the "Free Flight" screen-either from "all" or "publisher" or "manufacturer" I think it is (2) Once you end your flight, it logs your time and aircraft time in the "pilot records" section.I'm anxious to try a couple of payware planes they look really great. (The Carenendo Beech Mentor, and Shockwave P51 I'll probably buy today).I don't mind paying (a reasonable price) for add on aircraft.
