My Flight Down to Almost Minimums Today

Featured Replies

Likely because I've been doing a lot of VFR GA flying since moving to MSFS, I haven't had many opportunities to experience/appreciate how it handles low visibility situations close to ground.  Today I flew Halifax (CYHZ) - Montreal (CYUL) in the FBW A320N both as I hadn't flown an airliner in a while and because I wanted to test out the new FSimStudios CYHZ scenery.  Side note, the CYHZ scenery is fabulous, a superb rendition of an airport I know like the back of my hand, well worth a look!

Weather was miserable at both airports, rain, low vis and low ceilings.  On final approach to CYUL, I was in the clouds with zero visibility and heavy rain, got down to around 800 ft AGL, saw the lead in strobes, then didn't see then, saw them, then didn't see them.  Finally I could see them consistently, then it was the runway coming in and out of view until finally I could see it clearly around 350 ft AGL (minimums are 300ft BARO).  Touched down and all was good.

The feeling of uncertainty in whether I was going to be able to see the runway to land was fabulous and the immersion was top notch.  I really got the sense that I was flying though a non-homogeneous cloud that had different levels of visual range.  Usually in previous sims once you have the runway, you have it.  But on this flight, I was ready for a go-around right up to the end as the weather seemed that dynamic.

Certainly a lot of fun and very impressive to me!

And it's only going to get better!

I noticed this the other day...the variability as you proceed through the approach. Good stuff.

It was a clear case of « When I get low, I get high »

One could make a song out of it 😉

I have had more than a few approaches ending with the minimums, just being able to see the runway lights. It gets exciting especially if you are hand flying the ILS.
