Able to reproduce CTDs now

Featured Replies

MSFS has been pretty stable for me, even through SU5 and the hotfixes. But today I decided to really start to dive into this sim and I am now seeing CTDs, and I have spent the last two hours reproducing what is going on.

Last night I did several long flights (2 to 4 hours each, had one run overnight), all resulting in zero CTDs. Today I have had 5+ CTDs, and can easily get more on demand. Here is what I am seeing so far...

If I take off from say Heathrow and fly to Hamburg, I can restart that flight over and over without CTDs. I can go back to the main menu, reselect the same two airports, and I can takeoff without issue. But when I select a different destination (say Heathrow to Frankfurt), or two completely different airports (say Denver to Los Angeles) I get a CTD. It usually crashes before the airport even loads.  I have confirmed this in the CJ4 and the DA62 (standard and with mod), so I do not believe this is aircraft related.

The only reason I can think of that I have not seen this before is that I usually just load up MSFS, select one plane and then start a long flight. The switching between airports was something I guess I was not doing. I also suspect that switching airplanes between flights might somehow help avoid this issue, but that has yet to be confirmed.

My next test is to clear out my community folder completely and retest. If that yields the same results, I will start to go through my settings, including the config changes, installed add-ons within the marketplace, etc.  There is definitely something going on, so I will update this thread as I learn more.

UPDATE: It was TrackIR. I shutdown the TIR software and no crashes now. Stability has completely returned. So if you are having major CTD issues look at your USB devices. Yokes, joysticks, head tracking, etc.

I had problems with my 13  year old Track IR, I replaced it with a new one which gave me a big improvement and stopped some of the crashes I was getting.

I had a CTD earlier and it seemed to coincidentally happen when I plugged in the Xbox controller. It reminded me of the initial CTD bug we had back in August last year when MSFS first launched.

HARDWARE!

Yep. it was Track IR. I downloaded the latest software and it cured maybe 75% of the CTDs. I had to really bounce from airport to airport to get it to crash, and even then it only crashed going back to the main menu. I just spent the last hour without TIR software running and I cannot get it to crash now. The past few days I was testing it without TIR running, which explains why my system was so stable through SU5, HF1 and HF2. Only when I tried using TIR did this show up.

In conclusion...as BS says...HARDWARE!

What happened with mine is the USB circuitry apparently developed a problem and it would randomly disconnect and that was enough to CTD MSFS.

Might be the same issue with mine, Bob. Going to test my x52 pro next to see if my HOTAS has similar issues.

x52 Pro works fine. I guess I need a new TIR.

How old is yours?

Also avoid using a usb hub, and with all the hardware needed for flight sim, i think problems can occur with insufficient power supply.
