Won't run at all after update 8/26

Sorry I posted this in the CTD forum but that might be for older sims only.

I'm an old old user from 2 decades ago, I found my password reset email from 2005 and AVSIM said there is no account with that email so I registered again. 🙂

I haven't seen this particular problem on the microsoft or avsim baords, so bear with me....

I don't play often, mostly my son does and most weeks he is not behaving well enough to play. I figured it was time for a multi hour update so I would do that on Thursday so he could play over the weekend. So I open my laptop after being closed but plugged in for a few weeks, not remembering it was on and not remembering that FS2020 was still running with an aircraft on the ground. Ok I let him play figuring the next time it started up it would razz me for not updating. The controls on the ground didn't seem to work, had to apply full right rudder to go straight, and letting go of the rudder it would steer hard left.... but reloading the aircraft fixed that. So I go to work and come home and my son tells me it totally locked up mid flight, he couldn't do anything. Yup. I figured MS sensed that I was running an illegally, un-updated copy! I window-tab to exit fullscreen mode and get it to where I can task manager end task to close FS and start over.

Sure enough it says "mandatory update required" and figure ok this will take all night so he can play it again Friday. It says quit and go to the microsoft store, and it downloads quickly, being smaller than I thought. It is on 1.18.15. Once FS opens up again I get... "Checking for Updates spinning white circle, and we're hoping it's not a multi hour update... then that grey overlay with the spinning circle goes away and I see a small yellow plane in the countryside, a blue status bar at the bottom 50% or so full, moving, but when it gets to say 55%, it just crashes to Desktop. This has happened the same exact way several times now.

Aside I have not been able to install NVidia GeForce updates either (Have a RTX 2070-Max Q) for a few months. It does the 660MB download, in GeFroce Experience, I hit either express or custom installation and it says in small print "The installation could not be performed click here to exit" without any other hints.

Rebooted several times, microsoft update says all is up to date..... Anyone else having this issue? Sorry if this was solved weeks ago, there are hundreds of threads since if so. I don't have time to tinker like my younger days and really dislike this Software as a Service, but that's a whole 'nother topic for another day.

Thanks

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

That's fine, I figured after no responses there and pages and pages of posts today over here in FS2020, that this might be better.

Have you rebooted your machine in between?

If this continues, you may have to look at the MSFS support site, where other users have reported CTDs while loading the sim.

Yes, I said I rebooted a few times in between.

That sounds like the same thing that happened to me and several other people after the update. It kept stopping at Checking for Updates, and then it would say it was up to date. It just wouldn't start the sim.

The solution was to install the XBOX app. Go figure. But it worked. After that, the update continued normally.

I've had the Xbox app since I had the computer so that might not be it, but I will check the other links thank you!

Ok i seemed to have fixed. None of the tips in those links did anything, but after I re-installed xbox app, I signed out of my microsoft account. Then FS2020 prompted me to log in, I did so and then it got past where it was hnging and crashing.

I also updated my GeForce experience drivers manually - that didn't change the CTD behavior but now at least I'm up to date again.

I think the issue is that there was a complete revamp of the Xbox app, and the one you had from the start was no longer compatible, so you had to do as you did and remove and reinstall it.  Glad that helped.

When I had to completely re-install Windows on my desktop (clean install), I had a similar problem trying to reinstall MSFS; it kept telling me "installation failure."  After removing the old Xbox app and installing the new one, I was able to install it, but wind up in the weird situation where the Microsoft Store app thinks I have two different installations of MSFS -- one that I can update normally, and the other of which is still perpetually stuck in its installation loop.  Unfortunately, the only way I can remove that second copy is to remove MSFS completely from my computer, and I don't want to risk trying that and finding I can no longer reinstall it at all, so I'm just going to leave it as is.
