Fs2020 under Linux

Featured Replies

Hello,

Many of us play FS 2020 under Linux.

My main OS is Linux, not Windows.
So, I wanted to try.
I installed Proton (very easy under Archlinux : yay -S proton under my terminal.)
I installed windows steam program and Linux steam program.

Both versions want me to buy FS2020
I do use my WIndows Steam account.

Question : can I install FS2020 with steam under Linux WITHOUT buying it again ?

Answer : YES

I've got 2 different users with my steam account (same email) and was using the wrong one.

I cannot install FS2020 with Linux Steam.
I did install Fs2020 under Linux using the WIndows exe (WIne + Proton)

I will post a reply here after +- 10 hours flight.

how well does it run under linux? Are there drivers for the nvidia cards and are they on par with the windows version?

Hello,

Some info about Fs 2020 & Linux.

Installation :

Prerequisites :
proton-ge-custom + steam-native + wine staging
Very easy with your program manager. I used the terminal, as it is faster. Here is my gui showing proton

spacer.png

Problem : not enough space on my nvme disk for all world updates.
I have installed a new SSD 500 Gb and moved my Linux home partition to it.

Fs2020 :
132 Gb download for main program

21 Gb download for world updates

Fisrt launch was very long. Second and others were much faster

Loading times to main Fswindow : Linux vs W11
Linux : 3'50" - Windows 11 : 3'04
Windows files are on nmme disk, much faster than my SSD used for Linux. So, I cannot really compare

Loading times from main FS window to flight window : Linux vs W11
Linux : 26" - Windows 11 : 16"
nvme vs ssd , is W11 faster : I do not know.

FPS :
same airport, same place, same parameters : Linux vs W11

Linux : 67 fps - W11 : 77 fps
W11 offers more fps !

Yoke :
Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X -  no difference between Linux and Windows.

Community folder using 3 addons - no difference between Linux and Windows.

Performance :
At the beginning, many sutters and freezes under Linux.
The more I use it the less stutters I get. Freezes disappeared

Screen recording :
no Nvidia tool, so I'm using obs-studio.
Video is more fluid using W11 (probably because of fps difference)

Littlenavmap :
Runs perfectly under Linux.

I can use  windows flight plans made with W11 under FS 2020 Linux ! no need to start from scratch

Flight recorder :
does not work under Linux.

My conclusion :
I can play with FS 2020 using Linux. NO CTD !
Because of flight recorder, and fps performance, I keep using Windows 11 to produce nice videos

I'm using an
I9 32 gb ram + RTX 26060 super +  nvme + ssd disks

This is actually interesting as I very much prefer Linux to Windows myself. If it wasn't for certain apps that simply has no alternative in Linux I'd drop Windows more or less in a heartbeat.

That is interesting.  The performance in Linux considering it is running through Wine is particularly impressive.

Although it does depend a lot on screen resolution and settings inside the sim (high / ultra etc.).  what are your settings for this?

I am using those parameters with both O.S.

I fly full-screen resolution : 5120x1440

I will add some addons in my community folder.

Files location under Linux :
Main program :

/home/me/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/MicrosoftFlightSimulator

Community folder :
/home/me/.steam/root/steamapps/compatdata/1250410/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application Data/Microsoft Flight Simulator/Packages/Community

Warning:

spacer.png

You CANNOT install FS 2020 on an ntfs partition, you must use a linux partition.
You CANNOT use Z drive to choose a folder from root (/)

If you want to install 132 Gb + 20 Gb data elsewhere, you must symlink your hidden .steam folder !

C:\ is always in /home/you/.wine/drive_c
Z:\ is always available in Wine.
You must add other drives (example for me : D:\ and E:\) Then you display details, from here you can select the path you want for the selected drive !

I have had some random problems at the beginning with DirectX11 :
spacer.png

Problem solved opening Fs2020 in window mode.
I could then move to full-screen mode, and from that time, no more DX 11 errors (that was a strange problem)

Remember, at the beginning, FS 2020 will freeze quite often, you will get MANY stutters. Be patient !
Don't give up, after a while,  they will disappear.

I will enable data cache to see what happens ...
Still many things to test.
