Khyber Pass

Featured Replies

One of the oldest strategic roads in the world goes from the Indian Sub-Continent  to Afghanistan and further west to Central Asia and the Middle East. To pass the mountains, there is legendary notch in the relief, the Khyber Pass. For millennia, dromedaries and mules and now trucks and trains have been carrying their loads through it. It was a strategic choke point for the Brits, all the more important that they never really controlled Afghanistan and were wary of Russian plans to invade "their" India. More here on the Khyber Pass - Wikipedia. I was not lucky enough to see it myself in real but MSFS gives me a taste of it  with a good aircraft. So I did a flight from Peshawar to Jalalabad.

Jamrud, a suburb West of Peshawar : the notch on the left of the wing is the entry on a sinuous road...

A town has been prospering around this milestone of this intercontinental trade road . There were several British forts to contain the turbulent Pashtun tribes.

I wanted to, but the missus wouldn't allow, she was too scared of the Afghan tribes (although we bought many carpets from them in Lahore). 😃 So we took the other direction and went to the Hunza valley instead, north of Gilgit.

She would have been in good company, Kipling was shot at by some tribal warriors in Khyber 😉.

Hunza is on my list. I tried a flight but the weather was really nasty. Another time.
