Re-visiting Casablanca - the Airport and the Film...

Featured Replies

A while ago, I'd purchased the airport scenery (Casablanca) from the Aerosoft website, but had never got to install and use it. My interest in it was revived recently and fortuitously...when, during one of my recent (domestic) air-travels (see my previous two posts), the taxi driver who brought me from O'Hare to the suburbs...happened to be a Moroccan from the city of Casablanca...talkative fellow...who told me interesting bits about his hometown Casablanca...and, of course, about the classic film that immortalized the airport, along with the film's famous line, "Here's looking at you, kid"...🙂...

So, justifiably, the introductory paragraph of this (FSDG) Casablanca Scenery Manual, opens like this, too:

"Casablanca - what a city, what a history! Who does not automatically think of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in that timeless good-bye scene at the airport, when he hears the name of this famous city? Truth be told, no part of the timeless movie was shot at the old Anfa Airport, and the modern city of Casablanca has almost no resemblance to the one depicted in the classic..."

BTW, the film and its (famous) final farewell (tarmac) scene was actually filmed nowhere near (actual) Casablanca nor even in the African continent (though a historically accurate overlay map of "Africa" is displayed in the title sequence), but, in Burbank, California (the opening fly-past scene (arrival of the main antagonist) was shot (reportedly) at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California)...Anyway, here, we go with a real (eh...I mean virtual) visit to the iconic airport (supposedly) featured in the iconic film. Below, I've included a set of pictures from a walk-around tour...in and around (Casablanca/GMMN) Mohammed V International Airport...as it looks now...The airport seems modern, with two (N/S) parallel Rwys of identical length, width, and heading...with neat interconnecting taxiways...(see screenshots)...Royal Air Maroc is the primary carrier headquartered in Casablanca Airport...

And, as a bonus...🙂...you'll also see, below, a few shots of the (virtual) version of Casablanca's (Air France) Lockheed Electra 12A Junior (Reg. F-AMPJ), with yours truly, at the control, lifting off into the fog...just as in the climactic (final) scene of the film...🙂...(see below who else are on board the plane, with me...)....

If you wish, please search and view this (2m:29s) clip, "Here's Looking At You, Kid - Casablanca (5/6) Movie CLIP", which has the text of the exact dialogs subtitled. Note weather conditions (visibility 1.5 miles, light ground fog, depth of fog appx. 500 feet)...In this clip, you'll also find Rick saying his (other) unforgettable line, "We'll always have Paris"...

Of course, for aviation enthusiasts, the most evocative (and fleeting) glimpses of the Electra Junior (engines revving up) can be seen in the following 4m:02s clip of the final scene (search for "Casablanca Final Scene"). Do note the (prominent and classic) Air France "winged seahorse" logo on the plane (in my shots below, as well). The plane lifts off into the fog at 2m:58s timestamp of the clip (and disappears from view at 3m:08s)...carrying Victor and Ilsa, on board, who're leaving Casablanca (and also Rick) behind, forever...(Rick is left, though, with a good friend in Captain Louis Renault,..."Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”...which is the very last line of the film...equally unforgettable...)...

Hope you enjoy the pictures below, symbolic of the famous airport and the famous film...! Good flying...!!

Interesting post. Sounds like you've already gotten your money's worth (and more) out of this scenery purchase just in sheer entertainment value.
