Junkers Ju-52 in the Alps

Featured Replies

For this flight we could use the Junkers Ju-52 or any other plane with a cruise speed of about 120 KIAS.

TheJu-52  are stationed at Zurich-Kloten (LSZH). We depart from here and land at Hausen am Albis (LSZN) and Buochs (LSZC) to pick up our passengers for a flight through the Alps, into Northern Italy, and back to Switzerland.

On the way to Buochs, we overfly Lake Lucerne where we could see the two Steamships that were put there by Hendrik Nielson!

After departure from Buochs, we follow Lake Lucerne for a while and then start our easy but continuous climb to reach St. Gotthard Pass (6909 ft). The Gotthard Pass lies at the heart of the Gotthard, an important north-south axis in Europe, and it is crossed by three major traffic tunnels, each being the world's longest at the time of their construction: the Gotthard Rail Tunnel (1882), the Gotthard Road Tunnel (1980) and the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016). With the Lötschberg to the west, the Gotthard is one of the two main north-south routes through the Swiss Alps. Since the Middle Ages, transit across the Gotthard played an important role in Swiss history, the region north of Gotthard becoming the nucleus of the Swiss Confederacy in the early 14th century.

From here we need to carefully plan our approach into Ambri (LSPM) as we don’t have much distance available to lose the altitude we just gained. After departure, we descend along the Swiss Highway No 2 towards Bellinzona.

Here we can see the Three Castles [WP11]. These Castles are a group of fortifications located around the town of Bellinzona, the capital of the Swiss canton of Ticino. Situated on the Alpine foothills, the group is composed of fortified walls and three castles named CastelgrandeMontebello and Sasso Corbaro. Castelgrande is located on a rocky peak overlooking the valley, with a series of walls that protect the old city and connect to Montebello. Sasso Corbaro, the highest of the three castles, is located on an isolated rocky promontory south-east of the other two.

Our next landing is at Locarno (LSZL) at the shore of the Lago Maggiore. We fly over the beautiful lake and after passing Ascona we cross the Swiss-Italian Border and reach Italy. We continue along the lake and arrive at the area around Milan, the River Po valley. Milan is the second-largest city in Italy. We avoid the busy international airports of Malpensa and Linate and land the small field Bresso (LIMB), just north of the city of Milan. From here we turn north again and make a quick stop at the glider field Alzate Brianza (LILB), just to demonstrate that the Ju-52 can use pretty small airfields….

Next, we overfly the city of Como at the shore of the lake with the same name. Note the ruin of a castle [WP15] and the Como Cathedral [WP16]. We turn west and navigate around the mountains to reach Lugano (LSZA).

After departure, we overfly Lake Lugano and Lake Como, head north and then east. Latest after passing Lake Como we should initiate a steady climb as our destination Samedan (LSZS) has a field elevation of 5602 feet.

Aircraft: The route has 260 miles and 7 landings. I will be in the ASOBO Junker Ju-52 in a stock livery. Please fly what you like.

Flight plan here.

Scenery: All airports are included in MSFS. For Hausen am Albis and Samedan there are payware airports available from ORBX.

The airports of Bresso and Alzate are included in this addon, as well as the POI of Como:

Como (LILY) - Alzate Brianza (LILB) - Milano Bresso (LIMB) » Microsoft Flight Simulator

For Lugano this freeware is available:

Time and weather: With real weather selected we get some snow on the higher mountains. Please set your simulator for a 1 PM departure.

Lovely.. looking forward to it!

Suggest adding this POI which is within walking distance of where I spent about 10 years of my life..

and.. looking back, where I disappointed more than one lovely girl by taking her on a hike to the Uetliberg, instead of taking her dancing.. 🤫

BTW, if you are considering the Orbx airports, I would pass on Hausen which is barely good freeware quality..

On the subject. For those who like excellent freeware, you might like Sergio Del Rosso's superb Saint-Moritz – Samedan (LSZS). One of the best. At the flightsim.to site.

Hmm. Picking up passengers for a tour of the Swiss and Italian Alps. We should be represented by Ju-Air, the "Friends of the Swiss Air Force" flying operation that allows passengers to fly in these historic aircraft. Almost 40 years of success reflect the support of hundreds of volunteers as well as tens of thousands of enthusiastic passengers. The Ju-Air headquarters and maintenance hangar are at Dubendorf Air Base near Zurich.

Tragically, one Ju 52 was lost crashing into the Alps in August, 2018. Ju-Air suspended operations and refurbished the remaining two aircraft. The organization hopes that flights may begin again in the Spring of 2023.

Below is HB-HOS, in its new IWC colors, near the Ju-Air hangar and the Air Force Flieger Flab Museum.

Well, that makes it 0/2 as far as the Orbx scenery options are concerned (and $25 wasted for me..)

I have great respect for Andreas Hegi, the Orbx author.. but his provided photoreal scenery is so low resolution that it makes it look as if a piece of P3D scenery found its way into MSFS.

Lesson learned..

Can you clarify if you are writing about LSZN Hausen am Albis Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator,
by Terrainy Studios?

Doh! I was just going to say that. Look, it's on my copy thingy : https://flightsim.to/file/3361/saint-moritz-samedan-airport-lszs-v1-0

The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA

If you got this "Orbx" Samedan scenery, suggest you remove the photoscenery patch and rely on Bing scenery instead.. for me, that makes quite a difference..
