The worst Christmas Gift....

Featured Replies

They're so easy to give.  Just upload Swiss Colony or some other similar website, order a gift basket, supply an address to send it to, and give them a credit card number.  No Christmas chopping or picking out that perfect gift for a loved one.  No fuss.  No bother.

But the contents are cheap and terrible.  Bland Cheese.  Bland summer sausage.  Stale candy.  Tasteless crackers.  And all that flavored coffee and hot chocolate nobody really likes.  Soup mix nobody bothers to make.  It's the new substitute for fruit cake.  And almost all of it goes in the garbage sack.

I'm telling the kids next Christmas no more gift baskets.  I'd rather you didn't send anything.  But if it has to be quick and dirty a restaurant gift card would be nice.  Like Red Lobster.

Now fruit is a different story.  Harry and James sends boxes of fresh fruit.  Betty gets me an annual subscription to the fruit of the month club for my birthday every year.  December I got a half dozen pears and this month I will get a half dozen oranges.  Part of my breakfast every morning consists of a tangerine, half a cut up apple, and a half dozen or so grapes.  Plus some of whatever the fruit of the month happens to be.  In the evening I like the other half of the apple and some sliced blue cheese while watching a favorite movie on television.

My late mother used to serve grapefruit for breakfast at least twice a month. Cut the grapefruit in half, section it to loosen the fruit sections, then drizzle honey over them. Put in a 375º oven for about forty-five minutes (or until the surface has browned nicely and the honey is caramelized nicely.

I'm going to have to try that Fr Bill.  Sounds like my kind of grapefruit.

I've always wondered where the name grapefruit came from.

My cousin who's a citrus farmer once told me that "It is believed that the name refers to the manner in which grapefruit grows in clusters on a tree. If you see grapefruit growing on a tree, you will notice that they grow in clusters. It is suggested that these clusters resemble the shape of large yellow grapes and so the fruit was called a grapefruit."

My grandparents retired to central Florida to live off of citrus groves they planted during their working years in North Carolina.  A few trees each year.  They had their Florida cousins watch over it for them until their 1958 retirement.  My grandmother was captivated by the success of a local company there and learned how to take those orange, tangerine, and grapefruit and turn them into citrus rind candy.  Oh but do I miss those days.  Here is a web site with some related history:

Oh my! How I dearly love citrus candy! I haven't had any in years though, and my Type 2 diabetes has put the kibosh on such delights unfortunately...

There's a place in Santa Fe New Mexico, a candy shop, that sells my favorite.  Chocolate covered candied orange peels.  Kindda expensive, but I treat myself every once in a while.

I looked myself and didn't find any candied citrus. Perhaps it's a "searonal" item.

I'm going to give them call tomorrow and find out what happened.  It's been several years since I was in Santa Fe but the past time I was there I bought some.

Charlie, I called Senor Murphy Candy Maker 1(800)983-0461 and they told me they carry the chocolate covered orange peels in the store but they are not in their catalog.  You can order them over the phone.
