Hi

Is the 5600x good for VR or would there be added value to go for something like the 5800x? I have a pretty powerful GPU (see signature for details).

Thanks 🙂

They're very close in terms of pure gaming performance. Where I live the price difference between the 2 isn't huge. The 5800X is about €80 more expensive and I'd probably just spend the extra just to get a little more oomph overall even if it's a small difference. Probably comes down to your budget in the end. If you wanted to save a bit the 5600X will do just fine for VR.

Wait for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (still AM4 socket!) hit the market before updating!

Thanks guys, I already have the 5600x & the 5800x is indeed very close now in pricing (cca 350€). So the change also involves deconstructing & rebuilding my PC hence questioning the ROI of making the change 🙂

I have a Samsung HMD Odyssey+ (https://www.samsung.com/us/support/computing/hmd/hmd-odyssey/hmd-odyssey-plus-mixed-reality/) and an almost identical setup to you (5600x/3080ti/3600 RAM/NR200 ITX). It's very smooth.

The only caveat is that headset is an older one with lower resolution (2880 X 1,600). The quest 2 is 3664 x 1920, the Vive Pro 2 is 4896 x 2448 and the Reverb G2 is 4320 x 2160.

I've also considered going from the 5600x to a 5800x/5900x and upgrading my VR headset. Been researching for about 6 months now. My current opinion is that the few extra 200-300 CPU MHz aren't going to increase the FPS significantly as the resolution increases based on 4k numbers - it becomes more GPU dependent.

In OP's situation, I would jump in with a current gen headset and see how it goes. If it's not great, then downgrade to a prev gen headset like my Odyssey.

Another caveat - I don't use any add ons. It looks great in vanilla FS2020, which is great for an "eye candy flight". I prefer X-plane for actual practice flying though, so resolution doesn't matter so much to me.

5600x, 6800xt, Samsung Odyssey HMD+
