Is it not possible to purchase direct from a developer and install their software into MSFS?

It is possible. Also purchasing via simmarket and otehr third party platforms.

But, looking at the overall sales, the MSFS marketplace still provides a large portion of the total income for a dev. And regarding these marketplace sales, steam users generate the smallest payout for the dev.

Thanks to those who answered my question. I can see the advantages of both internal and external options to buy but the greatest profit per sale is the direct option if less convenient.

From what I understand, Microsoft last year changed the cut they take to 12% to match the epic game store. Also with apps and add-ons, from 85-95% is passed to the developer

The downside with buying from the Marketplace is that all the files are encrypted. So external programs like Little Nav Map that need to read airport scenery files or aircraft config files won't be able to.

True. My first purchases where exclusively in the marketplace since I liked the idea of having all purchases in one place. It also makes it easier to keep track of updates for all addons. After finding out that Little Navmap couldn't scan the scenery I quickly switched over to other sources.
Too bad my first purchases will never be included in Little Navmap and I now have to register all new purchases in Excel. And I am quite sure I won't be able to keep track of all the updates for these addons.

I can understand the need for encryption but why can't they at least supply the necessary files for Little Navmap to scan? The same goes for some of the aircraft files we desperately want to modify.
This, and having clear receipts of my purchases would solve most of the Marketplace issues.

Advantages of market place:

  • one stop shop for updates
  • (hopefully) all marketplace products are compatible with each other

Disadvantages of marketplace

  • updates to 3rd party products need approval and only ship once a week, updates can be very slow
  • you get no itemised receipt stating exactly what addon you purchased
  • there is no cart so each addon is a separate purchase
  • MS restrict features allowed on marketplace addons. Examples include, the Fiat G91 and Nieuport 17 lose there ordinance, gunsights and guns in the marketplace version also some scenery has optional resolutions or other features which are unavailable in the marketplace version
