May 17, 200719 yr I downloaded SP1 and all I get is an exe with no instructions.Am I missing something?I am reading all the posts and I am sure I can't just run this with my FSX and all add-ons.It just wants to install. Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
May 17, 200719 yr Author Mike,Thanks for the response.I went to the website and I still don't see any "instructions".I am an old guy 60yrs.I have been doing this for a long time and I just thought that there would be some instructions on how to install this in regard to all the add-ons I have installed.I follow the forum and I don't think I should just run the EXE.I just copied my FSX to another HD so I can do whatever is requiered to istall SP1.THanks for any help.Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
May 17, 200719 yr I agree Ron. I am surprised that there are not instructions on the FSinsider site on how to apply this patch for those of us with jobs outside the IT industry and lives outside these forum pages. There is another SP1 of a C++ executable on the FSX SP1 download page that apparently needs to be applied for 3rd party addons with no mention or link to a base progrom. I assume we just do a search for it on the microsoft web site and install it. My plan is just to wait until this weekend when I have some time to do some blog and forum surfing to try and figure all this out. If I am successful maybe I'll post an SP1 "how to" for us old farts. Sounds like it might just be easier and quicker to uninstall everything FSX related and start with a fresh install.Best of Luck to ya,Ted [email protected] ghz, Noctua C12P CPU air cooler, Asus Z77, 2 x 4gb DDR3 Corsair 2200 mhz cl 9, EVGA 1080ti, Sony 55" 900E TV 3840 x 2160, Windows 7-64, FSX, P3dv3, P3dv4
May 17, 200719 yr Moderator Download the SP1 update to a temp folder, the download will create it's own subfolder named FSX SP1 RTWO:Documents and SettingsBillMy DocumentsTempFSX SP1 RTWIn that folder, you will see one file: fsx_sp1_ENU.exeDoubleclick on the filename fsx_sp1_ENU.exe and wait a few minutes while it installs.Done. :)Note: Do NOT bother with any other file or download unless some third-party addon you might encounter specifically asks for it, or complains about its absence... :-halo Fr. May 17, 200719 yr I'm sorry that page wasn't more helpfull to you, Ron. You might try this one:http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/archive/2007...to-install.aspxOtherwise, I believe Phil Taylor has blogged comprehensively on the subject of SP1 installation. You might find what you need from a search of previous blog posts.I hope this helps.Mike. Mike Beckwith
May 17, 200719 yr Thanks Bill,I appreciate the response and like the fact that I don't have to worry about that other download for now anyway.Ted. May 17, 200719 yr Author Ted,I posted another question about add ons and Bill answered it stating we only need default scenery and texture files. If I can find them on my cds I think I will delete my current scenery and texture files, install the default ones and run SP1.I think the only changes I made in my scenery folder was adding FS Genesis world mesh.I'll probably just copy it back.I have my current FSX totally backed up on another HD.Does this sound like a workable plan?Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
May 17, 200719 yr Ron,You could run the FSX installer from the DVD and select the Repair option. This should replace any add on scenery files with the FSX original files.Ulf B
May 17, 200719 yr Author Would that put all files back to default but not change any add ons that were listed separately? In other words my add on scenery and add on airplanes would still be there? Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
May 17, 200719 yr If it makes any difference, I think I spent more time in researching Phil's blogs than I did re-installing FSX. I just decided to apply Occam's Razor and do the simplest solution. For anybody who is curious:I do have a number of freeware and payware add-ons, but otherwise my copy of FSX is relatively un-tweaked and close to the original version. Those sim pilots with more exotic set-ups of FSX, including dual-boot systems and so on probably won't be able to do this as easily, but I am just guessing here. 1) Make sure you have back-ups of your files, and keep track of your add-on disks and serial numbers for later reinstallation. Do this before you do anything else! Make sure you have your FSX disks and serial number. Make sure you have a copy of SP1. Be sure to back up copies of these XP folders: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftFSXC:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMEApplication DataMicrosoftFSXAlso make back-ups of:Logbook.bin &GrantedRewards.bin2) I run XP, so I can't comment on Vista. I used the Control Panel to Uninstall all of my FSX add-ons, and then I uninstalled FSX. I also manually cleaned out anything left behind in my FSX folder. Some folks might want to use a Registry Cleaner to get rid of every scrap of FSX. I didn't: I wanted to keep the process simple, and I wanted to trust that SP1 would make re-installation easier, as one of Phil's blogs promised, at least if I remember correctly.3) Defrag your hard drive.4) Re-Install FSX.5) Install SP1 by clicking on it.6) Replace the back-up files into their original locations7) One by one, replace your add-ons.This worked for me, it was mostly simple, mostly painless. Of course this is only my experience with SP1, yours and others' may vary. I hope that it's easy for you!Jeff ShylukAvsim Product Reviewer
May 17, 200719 yr Moderator Very methodical, Jeff. I still find my method quicker, but then having been through the process during the course of the past few months of testing, I guess it's become quite routine for me... ;) Fr. May 17, 200719 yr Author Bill,Don't we have to have the original scenery and texture folders installed as you responded to another post of mine? Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
