I'm about to pull the trigger on MSFS, finally. I intend to download the content within the sim via a different network at work which is lightyears faster than mine. I can't however bring my desktop PC, which is why the following is my plan:

  • Install the base program on both my desktop flight sim PC and my laptop (Steam)
  • Download the content within the sim to my laptop
  • Move the downloaded content from laptop to desktop PC

This would be done using an extra SSD solely for MSFS on my desktop PC, so it's not in the default Program Files directory. What's fundamental to this is that I believe the chunk of files that make MSFS so big is the content and that that's installed in a single folder (Official?) so I can just drag and drop it out and into MSFS.

Is this correct/would this work?

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I'm just wondering if your local network is that slow, will you have enough bandwidth to run the sim?  With photogrammetry?  The other thing that comes to mind is you must planning to install the SSD on laptop and then transfer the physical drive to your desktop, otherwise you'll be at the vagaries of your slow network speed, won't you?

I can’t help thinking it might be simpler to just let it start downloading on your home pc and....go to work?

No need to move the downloaded content from laptop to desktop PC

At work, you install and download the content on your SSD drive using an USB adapter : simply use same drive letter when performing second step (content, World updates) on your home Pc computer.

No it's not, that's the whole point. My internet connection is about to be updated but for now it's still slow, which is why downloading MSFS would take like 3 nights. My work connection however is a 784 Mb/s fibre connection, which would download the sim in about 30 minutes or so.

I thought about using an ethernet cable.
