Saturday March 19th Flight

Basically a tour of RAF and ex RAF stations with a BoB history. Of course there were no PBR and PSD a GTX750s in those days and aircraft were equipped with whirly round things attached to the nose and were of an aggressive nature. If you can kit yourself out with something along those lines it'll be good. I'll tally ho in a Spitfire.

Insert picture of Spitfire HERE

Manston: On 10 September 1939, No. 3 Squadron flew in equipped with Hawker Hurricanes and Manston was put under the command of No. 11 Group Fighter Command. They came in for some serious stick during the Battle of Britain.

Southend: Really good payware on OrbX I didn't realise it was a fighter station! In 1939, the Air Ministry requisitioned the airfield and it was known as RAF Rochford during World War II as a satellite airfield. During World War II, it became a base for fighter squadrons comprising Supermarine Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes as well as Bristol Blenheims.

Biggin Hill:  Quite a history. Well worth a Google.

Dunsfold: No add-on as far as I can tell.Yeah, yeah Top Gear blah blah, but did you know it was built by the Canadian Army and completed in just six months! The RCAF flew Tomahawks and Mustangs.

Blackbushe:   The station was opened on 1 November 1942 as RAF Hartford Bridge and it was used throughout the remainder of Second World War for reconnaissance, defence and strike operations using Supermarine Spitfires, Douglas Bostons and de Havilland Mosquitoes. It was also the home of the Free French Squadron (Lorraine).

Northolt:   I'm reaching overload on squadrons, pilots and tales of derring do. Look it up, it's riveting.

North Weald: Couldn't find a freeware offering but the default is good. I used to live there during part of my time in the RAF. That's enough to make it famous eh?

Duxford: + Airshow Add-on. Will ensure we get a warm welcome. 🙂 Douglas Bader's station.

Wattisham:    Another place I hung my beret. From 1939 to 1942 Bristol Blenheims operated from there. in 42 it was handed over to the USAAF.

Marham:  Wellingtons, Stirlings and Mosquitos. Marham became part of the Pathfinder force.

And finally, Coltishall.Sorry, another no-show on the scenery front. Work on RAF Coltishall was started in February 1939. The airfield, then known as Scottow Aerodrome, was initially built as a bomber base, on land near Scottow Hall. Following the established tradition, the station would have been named after the nearest railway station, which would have made it "RAF Buxton", but to avoid possible confusion with Buxton, Derbyshire, it was named after the local village of Coltishall  instead. The airfield was completed and entered service in May 1940 as a fighter base. The first aircraft movement at Coltishall was a Bristol Blenheim IV L7835 flown by Sergeant RG Bales and Sergeant Barnes.

During the Second World War, Coltishall operated the Hawker Hurricane, and a notable Coltishall fighter pilot was Douglas Bader. It later became home to night fighters. At the same time the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm operated aircraft from RAF Coltishall over the North Sea. At the end of the war, Coltishall was briefly given over to Polish squadrons until they returned home.

Ahem! Well done Josh for noticing there's no flight plan. That's what we need on this sortie, observers. HERE

To your duties...Dismiss.

I noticed a few days ago but it said scramble!! so I picked an RAF Base and scrambled from there.. figured that we would match up as a squadron!)

Also noticed your missing SPIT from above where it says    "  Insert picture of Spitfire HERE "   <<<<  but it didn't get inserted cause I guess that your camera got shot up or something?

So here you go.

If I make it today, (and I sure do hope to), I'll be in a SPIT. Like what else!

Excellent Buzz. Dropped your flaps a bit early if I might say so. Now if only some of us could set up a display team.....
