How do you install Freeware aircraft?

Featured Replies

Hi I have downloaded a few aircraft to try out, unzipped them as they are, now some show in hanger some don't

For example In my Community Folder have

(spaces just to make it easier to read!)

WORKS

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\         aerosoar-mig-15  \Simobjects\ Airplanes\MIG 15 (then folders in that like panel, sound etc)        WORKS FINE

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\         flybywire-aircraft-a320-neo\SimObjects\AirPlanes\FlyByWire_A320_NEO                                   WORKS FINE

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\          beekay-aircraft-heinkel-he162\SimObjects\Airplanes\BeeKay_Heinkel_He162                          WORKS FINE

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\            destroyer121-c17\SimObjects\Airplanes\C17                                                                              WORKS FINE

But tried installing theses

WONT WORK

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community           Mitsubishi_A6M5_Zero \ Simobjects\ Airplanes\ A6M5_ZERO      DOES NOT SHOW IN HANGER

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community            Hawker_Hurricane_MKI_HGwAY  \ Hawker_Hurricane_MKI_HGwAY  (also some pac file)     \SimObjects\Airplanes\Hurricane   DOES NOT SHOW IN HANGER

C:\Users\steve\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\           jonx-optica-msfs\SimObjects\Airplanes\jonx-optica   DOES NOT SHOW IN HANGER

However all the ones that don't work  when I go to my profile are listed in Content Manager

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks for any help

That looks like you did it right, but why doesn't the Zero and the Hurricane Community folder have a slash at the end of the path, like the ones that worked?

Mods are easy to install in MSFS if you have Community on the QuickAccess bar in File Explorer.

Then you can open Community and Downloads at the same time and just drag your aircraft to the Community folder.

Most mods come packaged in a ZIP file, unzip it and find the main Aircraft folder and copy (or cut) and drag it to Community. The main folder is always the one that contains SimObjects, Effects and ContentInfo and perhaps a few others. In the example above you would drag  Mitsubishi_A6M5_Zero to Community.

If you put the ZIP file directly into Community and unzip it there, it makes another folder that you don't want.

just a typo from me sorry , I do as you say it’s baffling  me why they don’t show. The only thing they have in common is the ones that don’t work were. .rar files.  But that  should  not matter? 😥

This may not solve your issue, but quite frankly, you should not install any of them directly into the Community folder.  Instead, create an Addons folder somewhere for these aircraft and use the Addons Linker to activate them. 😉

What program are you using to unzip the files? Sometimes certain programs fail to fully extract all files, and since all the failed ones are RAR archives, maybe that is the issue. I use 7Zip and have never had a problem unzipping any add-ons. If you're not already using it, give that a shot.

Some unarchivers have problems with the latest rar compression algorithms (though they should give an error), try again using winrar?

Also check that you have the layout and manifest files in the package folder, msfs will not recognise the package without them even if the simobjects folder exists.

Hi brilliant , thanks Winrar did the trick, had been using 7-zip  and  a trial of winzip.  All sorted.  Thanks to all who posted advice.  This community is fantastic with help.

Thank you thank you thank you .  😉
