KHAF [RNAV(GPS)RWY 12] ... in a Grand Caravan...

Featured Replies

In my previous post, I'd shown a set of pictures from around (KHAF) Half Moon Bay Airport, in Northern California. The Orbx documentation, for this scenery add-on, (thoughtfully) includes IAP Charts for both "RNAV(GPS)RWY12" and "RNAV(GPS)RWY30" Approaches into this airport, with a tempting suggestion, "...the spectacular coastline around the airport makes for a truly amazing approach and when you land, you’ll surely have a great meal waiting for you at the Three-Zero café...so, you may want to brush up on your IFR skills, as the airport is clouded by low lying fog for many days of the season, making the approach a little trickier...!"

"Trickier" was, to be honest, actually an understatement for this wannabe and virtual pilot...🙂...and it didn't help that I (artificially) injected fog and 2 miles visibility, for realism, to make it bit of an extra challenge.... see below...

Anyway, wishing to perform the RNAV(GPS)RWY12 approach, I looked, first, for a (familiar) a/c but one that I've not flown recently...the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan came to mind. The SIM a/c here is by Carenado, and the nice repaint in the (fictional) colors of G-DREW, Aurigny Airlines, of the Channel Islands, is created by jankees...a frequent visitor and contributor in this forum...🙂... (see e.g., the post "Beech Baby"...). I have been always fond of the Aurigny livery since the earliest days of my interest in the hobby...and while looking, today, for a few new repaints for my Grand Caravan, I first happened to catch sight of the Aurigny livery, and then purely coincidentally noted that this (fictional) livery is created by jankees...(The way I look at these fortuitous events (have had a couple recently), is that when such (established) repainters create large number of repaints for numerous aircraft, over many years, the statistical probability of someone running into their repaints for a certain a/c is indeed quite high...and therefore it should not be really much of a surprise...even though fortuitous...)...

To make this Rwy 12 approach (intentionally and somewhat unreasonably) difficult, since I wished to mimic Orbx's words of RW difficulty for this approach, I created fogged-in condition with the visibility set to 2 miles. I took off Rwy 30, in the Rwy heading, for ~15 miles, out into the Pacific Ocean, to an altitude of 3,000 ft, tracked a (LHS) U-Turn direct to the (IAP) Initial Fix (IF) "FUJCE" (see SimbBrief MAP showing FUJCE relative to KSFO and KHAF), then activated RNAV(GPS)RWY12 approach on the (Garmin) GNS 430, tracking 122 degrees to the (next) Final Approach Fix (FAF) "JEVXY" at 1,700 ft, and finally lined up with Rwy 12, which is at an elevation of 66 ft. It's the last couple of miles, where, being blinded by fog and poor visibility, things seemed to fall apart...🙂...nonetheless...I did somehow manage to land my Cessna 208B (which felt rather bulky and heavy) nearabout the Rwy 12 threshold... (see touchdown shots) ...

They say the Cessna Caravan was "big" to begin with...compared to e.g., a Cessna C182, and the Grand Caravan is even more enormous and imposing...! It is reportedly the largest single-engine turboprop utility aircraft currently in production...!

Hope you enjoy these pictures of takeoff and touchdown, with the venerable Grand Caravan. And while at it, I also hope, you like the bright yellow colour scheme of the Aurigny livery, which is distinguished by the endearing image of a Puffin Bird on the tail of the a/c... [BTW, please note the first 3 screenshots, below, where I've (dutifully) practiced the "RNAV(GPS)RWY12" approach on my Garmin (GTN) Trainer, in advance of actually attempting the approach...]

In the last shot, you see me nearing the iconic (aviation-themed) 3-ZERO CAFE of Half Moon Bay airport (see my previous post for more details), unfortunately, however, though I (successfully) completed this amazing and challenging approach...there was no great meal waiting for me on landing, as promised....🙂... (the RW Cafe been permanently closed since about a year or so, notice, though, the (side-by-side) "ORDER" and "PICKUP" windows in the last shot...) ...

Thanks for your interest...!!

Appreciated the kind words...folks...glad you liked it...!

(The flight was barely 15 miles into the Ocean waters and then back...but was bit of a nail-biter...🙂...for sure...)

He's a bit far from home, isn't he?

Nice shots

Thanks, jankees... 🙂... (True, this Puffin is flying a bit away from its home...couldn't resist the nice livery... at the virtual pilot's discretion...)  ...
