error on re-installing

Featured Replies

After a long period of absence  l am trying to install fsx and cannot because l am getting error 1607 unable to install Shield Scripting runtime .

The DVDs are the originals l used before .

Any Help please

Welcome to Avsim!  A word of advice on installing FSX.  The boxed versions are the worst and MS no longer supports FSX.  I highly recommend FSX Steam Edition as it has a ton of bug fixes and tweaks, so you don't have to mess with the cfg file and installation is a breeze.  As far as I know, all FSX add on's work with FSX Steam Edition.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Thank you all but none of the suggestions solved the issue . Forgot to mention that l run Win10 if that makes any difference.

l am thinking of purchasing the Steam Edition  but l am not certain if l will not run into the same problem .

You will definitely be fine with the steam version, I reinstalled it last weekend with no problems on a Windows 10 machine

The problem is that FSX was not running properly so l uninstalled it from the control panel .

Now when l try to install , the wizard opens with Uninstall/Repair options , which means that there must be in the system

residues (!) of FSX which l cannot locate to delete . l am not certain they will not effect the Steam version instalment .

The chances are even though you have uninstalled using the control panel there will be some old files left over on your system that you will need to eliminate before attempting any sort of reinstall.

I recommend following the instructions in the guide below, this should give you a nice clean uninstallation.

Thank you Dazkent

All these instructions fr cmplete uninstalling l did before posting my problem .

l gave up , downloaded and installed Steam Edition and works just fine . Ignored wharetever leftovers alltogether .

l was afraid some of me addons will not work , but so far Airport Design Editor and Instant Scenery which are my favourites

work OK . So all is well .

Thanks again , George

PS . When l start the program there is a "Security Alert" pop-up and  a "Home Page" before opening of the Free Flight Page .

Do you have any idea how l can get rid of them so it opens dirrectly the Free Flight Page . Thank you

Look in the FSX-SE.cfg and there should be something to the effect of "Show Opening Screen= 0  Set it to 1

There is not FSX-SE.cfg , there 5 or 6 different .cfgs which are irrelevant .

Also RoboticRV's  suggestions does not work for me the "Show opening screen" was already selected .

If you have only ever installed FSX Steam Edition, then your configuration file will be named "fsx.cfg".
It is to be found at C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\fsx.cfg

If you have not succeeded in removing all traces of FSX, then your configuration file will be named fsx_se.cfg.
It is to be found at C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE\fsx_se.cfg

The appdata folder is hidden by default, so to see the full path, you will need to enable "Show hidden files folders and drives"
and also disable "Hide extension for known file types" in the Windows File Explorer View settings.

The "SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=1" setting is to stop FSX from starting straight into the default flight and does not address what you want.

The way to solve your problem:

Open FSX.
Click past the error message.
Select "FREE FLIGHT".
Close FSX.

When you restart and thereafter, FSX will start at the "FREE FLIGHT" screen.

Thank you @Reader

The FSX-SE folder has no fsx_se.cfg file , only a .xml file which is actually the Instant Scenery .xml

Could it be that when intalling instat Scenery , it removed the fsx_se.cfg file ?

If you have a pure steam edition FSX:SE, in other words you successfully removed all traces of FSX boxed before installing the steam version, then there will be an fsx.CFG in your folder: "C:\Users\you\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX"

There is no fsx_se.cfg in the folder "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX" but you will see Scenery.cfg.

References to fsx_se are available when there is detected an FSX Boxed installation when you installed FSX:SE so that you can have both versions on the same PC.

If you have references to fsx_se it might be a good idea to uninstall the lot, remove all traces of both including the documents folder and registry entries and install FSX:SE again, otherwise there may be some troubles arising in the future.
