HT / SMT with SU10...

Featured Replies

I have reverted to SMT OFF while playing XP12 because XP12 uses as much as 2 cores and this way I get lower CPU temps and I'd say, better performance.

Wonder how MFS deals with HT or SMT OFF compared to ON ?

Any ideas ?

Thx !

This pops up every two to three weeks... my opinion: if turning off HT/SMT is needed, you either did a lousy job with your OC or you have bad cooling/air flow in the case or all three of them... even back in P3D/FSX days this was not necessary because the proper affinity mask did the same.

just give it a try, I have a 5900x with PBO, all water cooled no temp restrictions. I see better performance with HT of then on ( 3 fps average ). But a 5900x has enough cores, and msfs is not using all of them, even not wtih DX12. Every system is different, and it also depends on what you have running in the background.

How many cores can MFS effectively profit from ?

I opted for SMT OFF becauase I was testing XP12, and XP12 doesn't use more than 2 cores apparently, GPU XP12 uses more evenly though...

I have a 5900x with PBO and watercooling and see no measurable difference.

For me it's more a question of saving energy and noise... Energy because I pay it, noise because other human beings share my SIM PC room with me and complain when the fans start spinning madly...

Then, as I asked above, how many CPU cores, real or virtual, can MFS effectively profit from ?

true, think difficult to see. But on EGAA at stand 17 with Fenix, I do see a difference of 3 fps each time I switch. no traffic etc. but in flight I can not see the difference.

There si not any reason to switch off SMT/HT generaly in a normal conditions. It could by use for debugging software or similar reason, bud there is not any advantage if everythink works nornally. You can't get any energy savings, because if all cores are not loaded by your apps, it do not generate power consumption and heating. So switch it on and forget, that setting there exist 😉
