October 20, 20223 yr Author I have been bouncing back and forth Intel/AMD since I built my first machine back in 2006- a core 2 duo. My son acquired that machine and I then built an AMD Deneb quad core which lasted 7.5 years before this i7. Somehow I fell into a pattern of upgrading the GPU halfway between pc changes. I expected this machine to last 7 years at least- it may be my last one being my age. It still works well. As I said the only thing I do that challenges it is MSFS. Other than that I play Civ 6, World of Warships, Ultimate Admiral series and a couple others. Surf the web too of course. I think I'll just go to an RTX 3080 (PSU too of course) and I'll be satisfied. Play around with the bios overclocking maybe. Thanks for all your input. P.S. Oh yes- I turned on Developer Mode and the GTX 1060 was the botteneck as expected at 42 ms (whatever ms are). milliseconds?

Be aware that if you can pick up a cheap 9900K somewhere it will likely slot straight into that ASUS Z370 motherboard without even a BIOS update and give a nice performance hike over the 8700K. However also be aware that if you overvolt a 9900K they can turn into little mini toaster ovens. Also a 9900K is about equivalent to a 12th gen i5 so do not pay too much money for one. October 20, 20223 yr Author I looked on NewEgg (my prefered vendor) and the only 9900K there is an i9-9900KF for $664. Whoa! If I'm gonna spend that much on a cpu I'll go whole hog and get a new motherboard and all. Used? Idk that relies on luck and I don't have much.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler. 60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking. very nice.

LCAir--my retired RTX 2070 Super is roughly 97% faster than GTX 1060, and sports 8Gb of VRAM. PM me if you would like to buy it. It was almost good enough for my MSFS use and after performance improvements in SU5 I almost didn't install the 3080Ti I bought, but I did in the end. The 2070 Super is in perfect shape, never o/clocked, always ran cool, and has about a year of use on it. It is the Founders Edition, as is my 3080Ti. I think 2070 Super at 1080p would be more than excellent for your needs, and the price will be right 🐵 The RTX 2070 SUPER is faster by 97% for 1440p gaming. For 1080p games, upgrading from GTX 1060 6GB to RTX 2070 SUPER is not worth it if targeting 60 frames per second. In addition, taking into account the huge price difference between the two, the GTX 1060 6GB is a winner. Yeah for that money you would get a current gen MB and i5/i7 that would be faster.

Something a little beyond my current build which will still be operable if I build something new under it.

October 22, 20223 yr Author My grandson is 18 yo and beyond onboard graphics. Nor is he into flight sims. Its more a matter of keeping up with his older brother. And "grandpops" is beyond onboard graphics too. Common sense? Well that is another question...
