Moving Microsoft Flight Simulator to another folder

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I downloaded the game today on PC from XBOX app and chose the location install to be under F:\Games\Microsoft Games. Inside that folder, only 2 GB were downloaded, and the rest 100+ GB is under F:\Program Files, F:\WindowsApps, F:\WpSystem.

Why is it like that? Can I move the Program Files, WindowsApps and WpSystem folders to were I wanted the game to be installed? It's really bothering me.

Thanks!

this is why Microsoft invented Zendesk:

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, HP Reverb G2 VR headset @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Aeronautical Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Thanks for the links @turbomax as I am also thinking of doing this. Not wanting to hijack this thread from the OP but also not wanting to start a new thread…

My sim (Steam) and Community Folder are in a custom location on E:\ Moting else on this drive, it is dedicated to the sim. I am running low on space on this 500GB SSD drive, so looking to install a new 1TB NVMe.

I know one option is to simply move the Community to the new drive as it is around 200GB and create a symlink by running a mklink cmd (or Add On Linker) but I would not mind moving the entire contents on E:\ to the new F:\

Is it really as simple as copy/paste the entire drive across to the new one and just changing the one line in the UserCfg.opt File?

Wpsystem is the main container, generated by MS at install.  You appear to have all the files on the drive that you selected, so mission accomplished!  I would leave this alone, since moving folders by hand is likely to lead to trouble down the road.

Having said that, the Packages folder, containing the Community and Official folders, is movable as explained above. Just update the UserCfg.opt file after the move.

Lastly, invest the time in installing and using the freeware Addon Linker.  It is essential! 🙂

That line refers to the "Packages" folder that contains the Community and Official folders.  So yes, you can move that folder and all its contents... not the entire drive. 😉

Be aware that there is another Packages folder higher up the tree... just to confuse us all!

Thanks Bert. That clears it up for me. That’s exactly what I’ll do then, move the Packages Folder with the Community and Official folders to the new 1TB Nvme drive. I hope it does not affect performance as it means the sim Is then spread across three drives with some files on C:\ where Windows is installed (Nvme), the original E:\ dedicated to the sim (SSD) and now the new F:\  (Nvme).

Then I will hope that come the next Sim update, I do not end up having to re-download the entire thing…😁

makes no difference, as long as they are not old slowly rotating windmill-like hard drives.😀

Curious about what you show here.  Is this a Win 11 thing? because I dont see this type of dialog for any installed app using this process.  I only get a few options (open, pinning, uninstall)

CPU: Core i5-6600K 4 core (3.5GHz) - overclock to 4.3 | RAM: (1066 MHz) 16GB
MOBO: ASUS Z170 Pro |  GeForce GTX 1070 8GB | MONITOR: 2560 X 1440 2K

What I am showing here is a plain vanilla Windows 10 thing. I haven't upgraded to the Win 11 thing because of some known performance bugs specifically related to gaming.

In the Win 11 thing, it's just the same, however, it does not move the content, in either the Win 10 thing or 11 thing, it just moves the game, 1.9 GB.

The content is moved in the way that has already been described.
