I read about this combination but do not have a link at the moment.
Got a Dusk (dawn looks the same) screenshot just now:

No Active Sky

EA On in P3D Options

HDR Off in prepar3D.cfg (HDR=0)

My JPG (screenshot) link worked when I added (inserted) it to the AVSIM post (I could see it) but did not show up after Saving the post?

Exposure time and strength can be adjusted in the .cfg file.

Having bloom on might effect this as well but I don't use it.

The problem doing it that way is you’re effectively blind. That’s why the Live Graphics option is so useful.

Agree, these settings should be in Live Graphics so we don't have to keep restarting P3D which can take a while if one has many add-ons.
