November 28, 20223 yr If you've been keeping track, the ideas in this article are not exactly new. Concepts such as the singularity and the resulting creation of the singularity Institute have been facts of life for a while, as have increasingly loud warnings from some in tech and academia that humanity is racing headlong down a path that we don't even pretend to fully understand anymore . https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/the-highlight/23447596/artificial-intelligence-agi-openai-gpt3-existential-risk-human-extinction Edited November 28, 20223 yr by HiFlyer We are all connected..... November 29, 20223 yr Moderator A minor, but to my thinking is the algorithm that attempts to "helpfully" predict what one plans to type next. I've noticed that here at AVSIM this algorithm is getting generally "smarter" by now suggesting up to six or more words to complete my thoughts! Fr. Let's not put off regulating this stuff until it's too late. Reading the entire thing reminds me of the genie in the bottle or Pandora's box. If the human race has one collective bad habit it's procrastination. Kick the can down the road until we become inhabitants of Hawking's ant hill. Like Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and it is us." “You’re probably not an evil ant-hater who steps on ants out of malice,” the physicist Stephen Hawking wrote in a posthumously published 2018 book, “but if you’re in charge of a hydroelectric green-energy project and there’s an anthill in the region to be flooded, too bad for the ants. Let’s not place humanity in the position of those ants.” Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

And corrects me when my grammar is wrong even though I want it to be wrong to make a point. When it starts to read my mind while I am thinking about what I want to say before I have typed anything I'll start worrying. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. Meanwhile, Elon is busily making his own robots and working on AI. 🙄 I suspect his mindset is that its going to happen, inevitable eventually, so lest put safeguards in place. Exactly what Asimov warned about and the reason for his proposed laws of robotics. "A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."

And in 50 years my daughter will be 80 years old! 😲 Its half a century Noel. 😁 Technology can progress more rapidly than we expect though, or slower. I've seen estimates for true AI anywhere from 30 years to 60 plus. Quote Let's not put off regulating this stuff until it's too late Agree... Its something that we have been aware of and warned about for a very long time, since before Asimov. But yes, we should have some kind of plan in mind as to how we manage such technology. All advanced technology is disruptive and provides both benefits as well as potential dangers.
