If you want realism you'll have to just finish the flight or land sooner and apologise to the virtual passengers. Otherwise one might as well make use of the 4x or 8x speedup during cruise. I've only done this to troubleshoot changes so I have an identical test scenario to be able to evaluate a change. Beyond that though don't do it either. My typical flights are from 40 minutes to 5 hours with an average length of around 1.4h or so. Almost 100% success with hitting Esc > Spacebar to put the sim in a low powered state and can leave the sim along for hours, return and its all good. On occasion that fails but not often.
