Scythian archers gave Alexander fits while he marched from Persia to the Indus. They wiped out one of Alexander's armies at Polytimetus River. The Scythians and Slavs arguably are the same peoples, some of whom melded to become what we now call Russia.

Yup. Like that video; it's a classic. However I would guess the draw weight to be quite low.

Archery is a wonderful sport that I recommend to everyone. It is *WAY' more than a stick with a string.. 😉

Very low the look of it.

Now try it with an English longbow. The skeletons of English archers were deformed from years of archery.

I believe, between 100 and 200 lbs. draw weight if I recall. Those guys were clearly on roids. 😏 Probably stacking them and frequent cycles. 😄

Quote

eights survives from the reign of Henry VII.

[My yeoman father] taught me how to draw, how to lay my body in my bow ... not to draw with strength of arms as divers other nations do ... I had my bows bought me according to my age and strength, as I increased in them, so my bows were made bigger and bigger. For men shall never shoot well unless they be brought up to it.

— Hugh Latimer.[12]

What Latimer meant when he describes laying his body into the bow was described thus:

the Englishman did not keep his left hand steady, and draw his bow with his right; but keeping his right at rest upon the nerve, he pressed the whole weight of his body into the horns of his bow. Hence probably arose the phrase "bending the bow," and the French of "drawing" one.

— W. Gilpin.[13]

But Legoas was surely using a stout warbow?

I've been an archer.most of my life. Competitive at one time and a sportsman at others. I use recurve, compound, and cross bows. It's a great sport as long as you don't develop bursitis.

Thank you.

My longbow is hickory instead of ash or yew which I suppose an English longbow would be made of. D shaped belly (not round or flat), no backing of bamboo or fiberglass. Fairly near the real thing. Only it has a 'target' draw weight, which would have drawn only laughter in Robin's lair in Sherwood. 🙂

I think it cost about $120, but prices seem to have gone up lately.

One of the nice things with archery is that it doesn't really have to cost an arm and a leg. I bought a simple #40 longbow (I think maple and fibre glass) and it is a joy to shoot with the right arrow. Think I paid about €100 for it. The six arrows I made for it cost more.. 😉

Best line ever: "That still only counts as one!"  😂

Looking around online at the historical English longbow quivers, they don't appear to be designed for a fast draw, but for protection. Watching Legolas trooping along with the Fellowship on their long quest, it looks to me like he should have lost his arrows along the journey.

This technique is a bit different but is it practical?
