So, did I do it wrong by put my sim in B:/ ?

Featured Replies

Today I just reported a weird bug on ASXP12 to HiFi with logs, and they suggest me that I shouldn't put my XP and ASXP in B:\

I have been use B: as my main sim disk for more than 5 years, before that I have a computer build for years and the HDD have range from c to IDK R or T? I kept all my HDD with new build back then, but added 2 SSD, one for main system and one for game, To make the letter simple, I name them A: and B:, the main system ofc loaded as C:, but as I don't like win10 I installed back then, It's been on a "Backup" one in A:\ drive, and the other SSD have spited to B:\ for mainly sim but also some game that I want  faster load speed, and C:\ for win7.

And that kept for 5 years, before I changed my PC on march this year. while I have a all new system, to keep things simple and familiar, I kept the B:\ for the SSD I ran most sims on, including XP11,XP12, P3Dv5 and MSFS occasionally, along with some add-ons that I can choose where to install like ActivsSky, FSL, AIVA, AirManager etc....

For 5 years my sim mostly running fine, not without issue but just as anyone else would have, and most of the issues can be resolved thus not related, Do I have any problem that I haven't resolved? maybe, but non of them are critical enough to let me even remember, I haven't have any issue let me doubt maybe it's the A: or B: drive letter cause the problem ever before.

Search online on this topic I could only find the issue about windows won't index A: and B:, and also there are some software that won't list A: or B: for you to select, I had encountered some, but simply input it via keyboard they works fine with them too.

So, it there any hidden problem that could be caused by B:/ (or A:/, although I don't have it now, I was running some game on it back to my old system), as HiFi have suggested?

Well, the reason the OS is most commonly installed on the "C:" drive is that the A: and B: drive designations were reserved for floppy disks in the early PC days.

I'd like to think that system libraries have long-abandoned those distinctions, but it would not surprise me that there might still be some old code out there embedded in libraries that were built in layers starting from who-knows-when.

So call it superstition or just old-fashioned tradition, I still won't name a disk A: or B:

I agree too, for the same two reasons and with D to Z available, it seems that it really isn't necessary to use A or B at all.
If they are even suspected of being the cause of a problem, the solution seems obvious.

For XP, it would be easy.

But just think about what the hill I'll need to migrate P3D and it's add-on.... while all of them are just working fine on B: ..

Theoretically I can split it into 2 volume and only move XP then... but that's still hell lot of work for IMO not the decisive enough reason....

Out of curiosity, how long have you been messing with PC's?
