November 9, 20232 yr A good friend of mine did two tours of Afghanistan and has nothing but praise for chopper pilots generally and the close air support of the USAF in particular. It’s possible his opinion is coloured by being strafed by a female Harrier GR9 pilot who managed to make two passes on his unit before they could call her off. When the Air Force broke off from the Army in 1947 it was agreed the Army wouldn't fly armed aircraft and the Air Force would provide weather services for the Army. I was an Air Force weather forecaster assigned to an Army unit; an armored cavalry regiment. The Army started arming helicopters saying the agreement only applied fixed wing aircraft. In fact helicopter drivers don't call themselves pilots, but aviators. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
