Impressions of the Canadian Rockies...from MSFS...

Featured Replies

[On my Xbox system, due to the possibility of overloading the resources (though I've had absolutely no adverse issues, so far, in terms of my user-experience relating to performance), I've tended to avoid large updates from MSFS that are optional in nature. Instead, I've normally stuck with only those updates and installations that are mandatory. Today, however, I noticed a free Update in the Xbox Marketplace for Canada and the Canadian Rockies and opted to install this relatively (massive) Update.]

This is because, though, I'm rather familiar, both via RW visits and in the SIM, with the U.S. segments of the Rocky Mountains, I've never got to explore the Rockies north of the border. I do not recall any add-ons either for the Canadian Rockies in my past SIMs. By "Canadian Rockies", we refer to the nearly 1,000 miles of the (southeast oriented) segment of the Rocky Mountains from northern British Columbia, Canada, forming the border between the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. I've always known the Canadian Rockies to be special, filled with majestic beauty and splendor. So, after installing this Update, I set out to explore one major portion of the Canadian Rockies, in Alberta, northwest of the city of Calgary. I've traversed, here, about ~400 miles between Grande Cache Airport (CEQ5) and Calgary International Airport (CYYC). Grande Cache, a coal-mining town, has fallen into hard (financial) times in recent years, and the airport has been permanently closed. Nonetheless, in my virtual world, CEQ5's strategic location allowed me to quickly get into the thick of the Canadian Rockies, with the highest peak of the Canadian Rockies, Mount Robson (and what a peak it was), no more than ~50 miles south of the town.

As I've flown past Mount Robson's summit (see images below), I was so close to it that I felt as if I could stretch my hand out from the cockpit window and touch it...🙂...First of all, the MSFS rendition of this peak appears strikingly similar to what I've seen in on-line images of it. Second, Mount Robson has a precipitous (and nerve-racking) drop on one side of it, which is called the "Emperor Face", on which side I've flown by. Even in the virtual world, while seated in the comfort of home, the excitement of the fly-by of this peak, because of its proximity, was palpable...🙂... (please check my images (shot #s 7/8/9/10) and see if you agree...) ...

I've then continued to fly southeastward, tracking these mountain ranges, over (spectacular) alpine forests, meadows, lakes, and glaciers etc., to finally reach the urban complex of the City of Calgary (dominated by the Bow River), fly past the downtown, and land on its Airport Runway 35L.

Hope you enjoy this collection of images of the majestic Canadian Rockies, from the virtual world of MSFS.

Thanks for viewing.

Really nice series. So much fun exploring areas like that for the first time. Some sharp, ragged edges on that peak!

Nice pics! 😉

Great shots.  The Canadian Rockies are a place near and dear to my heart and a place I've been fortunate enough to visit many times in my life.

They are spectacular in real life and in the sim, though I wish we could get a high resolution mesh to really allow them to shine.

Thanks for chiming in from Canada...🙂....Your RW visits sound wonderful...Actually, there was once a serious effort on my side during the times of AAA TripTik days...🙂..., when one would go to their Office to get the MAPs and trip planner etc... but that plan never materialized...I wish I'd taken up that trip...maybe another time in future...

That was a superb trip, P_7878, thanks for taking us along!!

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Very nice series, love seeing mountains in the sim

All my FSX/P3D repaints are here on Avsim, for my MSFS repaints, go to FS.2
