Bella Coola to Vancouver... (PNW Part II) ...

Featured Replies

First of all, the term "PNW", here, is (maybe) bit of a misnomer. This is because "PNW" (please also see e.g. my previous post on Washington's Olympic Peninsula) refers to the geographical region that extends from southeastern Alaska in the north all the way south to Northern California, including the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho etc., and (at least) the Canadian province of British Columbia and more. Then, further north of this PNW region, is located the North American Pacific Fjords that include the Pacific coastlines bordering on the Gulf of Alaska to the north, towards the southeast, all the way down to the states of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia's Vancouver coast.

You will surely recall the (respective) Orbx products for these 2 regions from past SIMs, which I'd (previously) explored quite thoroughly and extensively. Especially, I recall rather well the delectable (Orbx) scenery add-on "CYBD Bella Coola Airport" which was to be mated with Orbx's NA Pacific Fjords scenery. However, the set of screenshots, I've shown below, here, are all from the default MSFS scenery (but quite impressive indeed), with no supplementary add-ons. Of course, I miss, here, e.g., the customized Bella Coola Airport features and ambience such as the (detailed) airport premise buildings etc. ("CYBD" is available as an add-on, if so desired).

Anyway, my focus, here, is to show you the spectacular terrain and landscape I encountered as I flew south from "Bella Coola Airport (CYBD)" in British Columbia, to "Vancouver International Airport (CYVR)" also in British Columbia. I have taken off (southward) from CYBD Rwy 23 (see my first shot, below), into the picturesque but congested Valley of Bella Coola River (see shot #3), surrounded on all sides, by remarkably beautiful (and high) mountain ranges. After gathering (safe) altitude, I've made a turn in the narrow valley and then proceeded southeast with my flight (directly) over and across the splendid Pacific Mountain Ranges of British Columbia.

I've essentially flown as the crow flies, for a direct distance of about 240 miles, whereas the roadway distance between these 2 places, that bypasses (and circumvents) the Pacific Mountain Range, is about 600 miles, nearly two-and-half times my flight distance.

Hope, you enjoy this collection of images, from my trip here, of the (incredibly) scenic and beautiful North American (Pacific) Northwest or Pacific Fjords, as it maybe also called...

Thanks for viewing...!

I notice your flaps were down most of the flight.  Slow flight?

Exactly right...Jim...🙂...You noticed...yes, for a better feel of the scenery, while flying "virtually", often at lower altitudes than the maximum elevation of these areas, I find speed to become a factor in safely negotiating the curves...There's quite a unique feel to these remarkable sceneries while flying within the narrow valleys...in slow speeds...

I think the MSFS (default) mountain topography is particularly impressive in the North American regions...

Beautiful shots of your scenic trip, P_7878 !

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Another terrific set of photos! Of course, your photos tend to elicit decades (OMG!) of memories from flight simming...made many, many DC-3 cargo flights in that region...Bella Coola, Prince Rupert, Bronson Creek, Wrangell, Sandspit and Port Hardy.

Just very recently made the transition to MSFS myself (after a 1-1/2 year hiatus) and rediscovering that area in the "new" sim...I may also have to pick up the paint brush again for some old DC-3 liveries I have not yet seen on Flightsim.to...

Thanks for the memories!
