Some tips regarding sharpness on 1080p monitors....

Featured Replies

Hello,

so i recently got a 4060ti with 16GB of RAM and I can really recomment this as a budget option for MSFS. While reviews claim that the difference between the 8GB and 16GB cards are not worth the extra price, this is not true when using MSFS, as on almost max-settings it uses around 12GB of VRAM and as long as there is some headroom, it will run smoothly.

My system is a 5600x, 32GB of RAM and the said ASUS 4060ti. So its kind of mid level, but for 1080p gaming works perfectly for me.

As all of you know, nvidia DLSS tends to makes images blurry. To counter that, it has to be combined with DSR which, on the other hand, eats up FPS and VRAM. However, there is a tweak that can be applied in the UserCfg.opt file (located in ....C:\Users\-username-\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache). So here is what I was doing using TAA on my old GTX970 before upgrading to the new card:

    PrimaryScaling 0.500000
    SecondaryScaling 2.000000

It provides a very sharp image at 0 performance loss. However, I noticed that with DLSS, the lights on runways, taxiways and streets tend to be so small they barely are visible and not really "shiny" anymore.

So, after some experimenting in the last few days I put:

    PrimaryScaling 0.750000
    SecondaryScaling 1.500000

This is the magic spot! The 4060ti 16GB runs DLSS with DLAA added in DX11 mode and 1080p perfectly smooth and stable. Since using DLSS+DLAA provides a bit of additional sharpness compared to the other DLSS modes, a bit of "sharpening effect" can be sacrificed by increasing primary scaling, which enlarges the lights to a level where they are realistically shiny again. At the same time, virtually all blurriness and shimmering is removed, resulting in a perfect image. As a side note, I set everyhing else to maximum in the graphics settings, except for "Terrain Level of detail", which is set to 200, and "Objects level of detail" set to 100. The post processing options at the bottom are a matter of taste. Same goes for AMD reality FX sharpening, which I left on 200 since it makes aircraft details more visible.

Also, I recommend setting AF to 16x in nividia inspector and switch it to "off" in MSFS options.

As for DX12: i stopped using it for now, as the same setting uses up all my available VRAM and the frame generation causes more stuttering in resource intensive sceneries than it actually solves.

maybe i will help someone with this. 🙂

How many FPS you get with the 4060Ti? It's hard to me to justify the switch to a 4060 (downgrade) or 4060Ti (too expensive). After getting the FG mod (and using Noel's RTSS Front Edge Sync method for locking FPS), I can no longer stand 30 FPS (at least not until I can finally disable custom camera transitions).

Also, how did you manage to enable DLSS in DX11? I thought it was a DX12-exclusive feature.

I am usually getting between min. 30FPS (frankfurt with addon airport, city and traffic) and 60 (in the air etc.). However, I am almost always limited by main thread so the 4060ti could deliver even more if my 5600x (and yours too) would let it. Its still fine by me, what I cant stand is blurriness and TAA (since it gives heavy shimmering to static objects).

DLSS is available in DX11 all the time already. AMD FSR is only available in DX12 and FG also is.

Whats the FG mod? I am willing to experiment more. 😉

I thought it was backwards. I'll check tonight. I hope I'm wrong.

It's something you don't need 😉 I mean, since you have a 4060 Ti, you can enable the actual Frame Generation with no mods at all, as everyone with a RTX 40 Series. Those with RTX 30 Series or earlier didn't have any option until last December, that someone released a mod enabling FG. However, it comes with some artifacts that I'm willing to put up with.

Which traffic and how many? With FSLTL and default enhanced EDDF, I rarely get 30. If I manage to do so, it's with a lot of stutters. You already saw we have the same resolution, RAM and CPU.

Dont worry, FG is available by default but also causes woes with my card. 😁

Your system is roughly comparable to mine except for the GPU. You should be able to get the same results. This is what i put into FSLTL:

20:09:40   Max Active IFR Aircraft (0=disabled): 100
20:09:40   Max Active VFR Aircraft (0=disabled): 20
20:09:40   Additional Airline Parked Aircraft (0=disabled / 10=max): 2 (max of 50 aircraft per airport) (since otherwise it gives me strange liveries on some airports)
20:09:40   Additional GA Parked Aircraft (0=disabled / 10=max): 2 (max of 20 aircraft per airport)
20:09:40   Max Radius to Inject Airborne Aircraft (25-150km): 125
20:09:40   Max Radius to Inject Ground Aircraft (10-150km): 50

Also whats your Terrain LOD setting? I have mine at 200.

Use TAA and turn up render scaling to 120.  Max AF and Max AA.

This will provide the best visuals in DX11 or DX12 at the expense of some performance.

DX12 seems to use more VRAM, though if you only have a 1080 monitor you won't be taxing your videocard at all.

Pretty much everyone is CPU limited in MSFS whatever settings we seem to use.

Oh if that were the case...

I have a similar setup and there are just some Airports that hammer the VRAM with Textures that runs full and FG starts to become glitchy.

Yep, I was wrong. I stand corrected: there DLSS in DX11 😁

It's strange you get better performance, while my settings are more conservative. These are my FSLTL settings:

Max Active IFR Aircraft (0=disabled): 8
Max Active VFR Aircraft (0=disabled): 3
Additional Airline Parked Aircraft (0=disabled / 10=max): 8 (max of 70 aircraft per airport)
Additional GA Parked Aircraft (0=disabled / 10=max): 8 (max of 20 aircraft per airport)
Max Radius to Inject Airborne Aircraft (25-150km): 40
Max Radius to Inject Ground Aircraft (10-150km): 20

I use AutoLOD, and set a minimum TLOD of 70, which I use for ground and landing.

I dont know, I dont like TAA as it gives strong shimmering on light poles and some addons terminal building textures even when the image is standing still (if anyone has LatinVFR LEMD, you will immediately see what i mean).

Thats really strange, are you sure your hardware settings and drivers are ok? Also turn AF off in MSFS and enable it via nvidia inspector, it helps a bit.

I have found this at some airports but whilst in some I get it only when using TAA and others when only using DLSS so for me it's a bit of a conundrum.  I guess it depends on how the developer built the airport.

BTW i got myself RTSS now and I set it 60FPS limit to save me some computing time. Anyone has a guide how to properly set it up for best results with MSFS?

I did the AF trick in MSFS/NCP. I also set texture supersampling to 6x6 in MSFS. It helps even more. The rest of my settings are on High or Medium (depending on my mood).

Actually, no: I found out last night that my computer was not using the High Performance power plan but Balanced. Now I'm checking again.

Yes. See Noel's RTSS Front-Edge sync method:

Very important: you'll want to adjust your FPS lock at will to keep smoothness at all times. Sometimes, you'll have no chance but to disable the lock. That's why it's so important to have the hotkeys defined in RTSS

So, after all this discussion, how did you finally set up MSFS at 1080p? DX11, DLSS+DLAA+the custom scalings, TLOD=200, OLOD=100, AF=off and everything else in Ultra?
