Hello, so I got some extra money recently and have thinking about finally buying a VR headset for MSFS and other games. I have been looking at the Quest 2 as it is in my price range, but had a few questions first.

1)  So, my first question would be, do you think I could get away with running VR on my system in MSFS and what kind of performance should I expect? Currently, I get around a constant 35FPS to 40FPS when I'm on the ground but will drop a little when looking around too quickly depending on the area, and will get higher in the air. My current specs are Ryzen 5 5500 CPU, Radeon 6600 GPU, 16GB RAM, SSD. Also any tricks for improving performance on AMD systems.

2) From what I understand, you can use the headset with a wire or use it wirelessly. Does it come with the cable and is it better to use with the cable or not. I read one person online say they got better performance when on wireless.

3)  I have watched some videos online of the headset, and I've noticed that sometimes when the person is looking around, the view is very shaky like there is a vibrating effect. Is this normal or is there to make it smoother.

Thanks.

You are going to have horrible performance on the lowest setting with your computer specs.

I had the meta quest 3 and returned it. Nothing was sharp in the foreground and or the horizon. I could only achieve 30fps flying outside of cities. My computer specs are notch up from yours.

The quest 3 did not come with a cable for wired connections, only for recharging the battery, not sure about the MQ2.

I did not experience any shaking in MSFS.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, RTX 4080S, Ram - 32GB, 32" 4K Monitor, WIN 11.

Thank you. Do you think I would be fine if I did most of my flying outside of cities? 30FPS would be fine with me, but I don't know if it looks worse in VR. Also, what about other games outside of MSFS that are less intensive for VR?

I have a Quest 3. I find the image sharp and clear.

Your system specs are not ideal for VR in MSFS. As for other PCVR games, around 99% of games are less demanding than MSFS VR.

The shaking you see in video is because the small head movements your head makes appear more pronounced when captured on video. It is not an issue when you are in VR.

I would not recommend getting a Quest 2. Leaks indicate that Meta is most likely launching a cheaper version of the Quest 3 in the near future.

Thanks. Could I upgrade my GPU to getter performance for VR, or would I need to upgrade the CPU and RAM as well? Also, do you know how much cheaper the new quest 3 will be? I can't go much above $200 which makes the quest 2 great.

A 4070 will allow running the Quest 2 (I have both a 4070 and and a Quest 2 and it will run MSFS fine). My cpu is 5800X3D. But it used to be a Ryzen 5 5600X which is a lot like yours and the Quest 2 ran on that cpu OK, along with a 3070 gpu.

If you don't have space for a wide gpu (i.e. the number of slots), then see youtube for specs on how many millimeters wide the card is. You might need one that is two slots wide or less. I did need one that narrow. Also my power supply is 600 Watts Gold and a 4070 + 5800X3D  will power up reliably, and my 600 watt PSU has never shut down the computer.

I think with your cpu then you must have an M4 motherboard. A 5800X3D cpu goes onto an M4 motherboard. I paid less than $300 for my 5800X3D. By the way, the 5800X3D is the best cpu that will go onto an M4 motherboard. the 7800X3D needs an M5 motherboard.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

When you say you had a Ryzen 5 5600X, are you saying you used that with the 4070? And my motherboard is a Gigabyte A520M S2H. I think I only have one slot for a card, but it's the only thing I have plugged in, so have a few inches on each side to get something wider. Also, my PSU is an Enermax Revolution D.F.2 850. so if the wattage is really 850 then I should have more than enough to upgrade.

Nothing is known about the possible price. The Quest 2 is currently being sold at a bargain price to get rid of stocks before the cheaper Quest 3 launches - it will possibly be named the Quest 3S according to leaks. I would expect it will cost at least $300, but it is just a guess. If you can wait and save up some up some more, the Quest 3S could likely be a better option than the Quest 2.

No, I used the 5600X with a 3070 and a Quest 2 was OK.

Your motherboard takes an AM4 socket cpu (for example the 5800X3D, but will not take the new AM5 socket cpu (like the 7800X3D which requires an AM5 socket cpu).

5800X3D is the best cpu your MB will take. And it is a great cpu, I paid $280 amazon, but price fluctuates.

Thanks. Out of curiosity though, If I did try and use a headset with my current specs, do you think I could get away with flying outside of cities? I like to do flights out of Edwards AFB which in the desert of California in the F-35, and other jets, so would be fine just using VR for that.

Yes you could with your present hardware. Unfortunately the Reverb G2 gives better performance (fps) than the Quest 2. (I sold my G2 for $200 used). But MS announced Windows Mixed Reality will not be supported in the next yearly update of Windows 11. And the G2 is WMR headset. But Windows 10 will continue to work with WMR just fine. Normally the G2 would give 30 to 40 fps. But in other areas the Quest 2 might give 22 fps and the G2 would be about 28 or so. But your hardware is less than mine was at that time (3070 and 5600X cpu).

A used G2 and windows 10 would work for you. So will the Quest 2, but less well.

I am just guessing based on my own experience, I do not think your specs are going to cut it at all.

It looked worse in my experience with MSFS. My 6800xt was not powerful enough to push the pixels.

If you buy the M2 directly from Amazon, you could ask for a refund if it does not work out. You might have to be creative when you ask for a refund, hint, hint....

For over a year, the Quest 2 was $400 on Amazon. Now it's $200

By the way, Aerofly FS4 (steam) is fantastic with the Quest 2 and modest hardware. Because FS4 uses a native VR driver and it was designed with the Meta / Oculus headsets in mind. No issues and very smooth when I had earlier computer hardware with my Quest 2. It's a shame that VR is not native in MSFS.
