Laminar Dev Q&A?

Featured Replies

Did Laminar abandon the DEV Q&A format? I thought it was stated that they would start doing more DEV Q&As. I haven't heard anything in a while on this front. Do they have any planned?

Id rather they finish 12.1 than look at doing another update on whats next.

They probably have not reached a milestone to have something to talk about and are letting there changelog do the talking for them. They have been very active at getting the beta's out and now we are up to beta 6. Don't know how much more they have to go to reach the end before their next run in 12.2.

we had a two day dev face to face in Montreal in feb, that covered everything planned for this year and probably most of next.

next update will likely come when they have something more concrete on stuff like the next gen scenery and xplane store.

It seems it is hard to fulfill communication promises. Understandable of course, but somehow unfortunate. I am sure there would be a lot of material for a new dev blog post as well.

Do you know if there are any plans to fix the horrible color banding we see at sunset/twilight ?

I think I recall seeing something last year with Laminar saying they would start doing DEV Q&As. Similar to what Asobo does every couple of months. I asked the question because I haven't seen the DEV Q&A idea materialize and I didn't see any updates saying they had scrapped the idea.

I'm aware of this but it was not for the general public. When I say DEV, I don't mean an event for Developers only. I mean an event where the general public can ask the laminar DEVs questions and so forth. The purpose would be to talk about the here and now primarily, not necessarily the future.

I don't think it was meant to be an update for what is next, just a simple DEV Q&A.

They employed Maya of enhanced cloudscapes plugin fame, so "probably"...

Well, Dev Q&As are generally not events targeted at the [people who complain the C172 pulls to the left when you dump full throttle on take off] general public, difference this time round is they went for a much stronger specifically 3PD involvement, I went sat on the fence about how much to commit to XP, I left 110% satisfied it was a platform well worth investing in.

They gave us carte blanch "not NDA'd" for all the material presented there, but at the same time a lot of it was fairly speculative: 12.1 = awesome, 12.2 = really awesome, beyond that = yeah baby.

previously dev Q&As were 1 or 2 hours random every year or so, little bit more regular recently, Montreal was 2 days morning till night "data download", we've not really scratched the surface of all the things discussed there (in sim store took a lot of mind share), quite a lot of which is pretty difficult to explain the implications to non technical people, so definitely the right choice to equip the more involved developers to communicate their future plans with those they interact with imho. Give LR more time to actually build this stuff.

I still get asked often what I mean by "LR" when I use it.

"simplicity is complex".

next gen scenery, plugins, avionics, atmosphere, airports, definitely others I can't think of after 1/2 litre of vodka on a Friday night, plans, proof of concepts, shipping dates, they live and breath this stuff.

Two things "dev Q&A" to watch out for with deep anticipation for more more detail on (imho) is probably "next gen" scenery and the "next gen" dataref editor

We got write up on the tech thoughts for next gen scenery in early March

https://developer.x-plane.com/2024/03/we-are-all-raster-farians-now/

12.1 already fixes water in Orthophoto, my scenery is already near perfect now,

Not seen any updates on "next gen" dataref editor since Feb. Sooner that comes the better imho.

I'm still no closer to knowing whether or not they plan on doing the Q&As with the community or if the idea was dropped. I guess no one knows.

Are you referring to the discord sessions? They've done 3 of those so far since that server started up. Could be a while before they do another. Herding the cats and such... plus the work needed to satisfy the demands of recording/transcription after the event. Sounds like they're all rather busy these days.

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...

You don't need to know. They will let us know if they will do one,
