Frequent freezing

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, in the last months I’ve been experiencing very frequent freezes (sim freezes, sound continues and, sometimes, it CTDs after some minutes, other times it just remains freezed untile I close it through Task Manager). I’ve not been able to understand the reason, since it seems not linked to a particular scenery or aircraft (I reproduce the same flight after some time and nothing happens). It happens randomly and almost when I descending…after a whole flawless flight :persevere:
Any kind of advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

That's frustrating at the very least!  Have you tried temporarily emptying the Community Folder to see if this resolves the issue?  If not, try that first.  If that doesn't do it I have to imagine MSFS is fine, it's likely down to system hardware/software.

How are CPU/GPU temps?  Have you emptied the DX cache folders and updated the GPU driver since this began?  How about deleting the rolling cache file if you have one active?

Just went through something very similar.

I'm on the Steam version which has an option to verify and repair files. When I went through that process, everything returned to normal.

Might be helpful if you mention which version you are running and what you have tried so far to fix the problem.

Are you using FSUIPC and with the save turn on?  This causes about a 5 sec freeze everytime it saves. Athough there are no CTD

You could also try this.  I copied this from a prevoius post, and it has worked for me, when I started getting random CTD. or lockup. Sorry, I don't know who posted it anymore, so cannot give credit. Make sure you read the bottom instructions if you do not have it installed in the default location.

Also, I only have the store version, so I do not know if this would apply to the Steam version.

Just wanted to share this one, in case it helps anyone who is getting CTDs after a Nvidia driver update;

I updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest version last week.  I immediately started to get lots of CTDs, at various phases of using MSFS.  I tried a few things, such as resetting all of the settings in the Nvidia Control Panel back to the Nvidia defaults, but nothing seemed to help.   I was even driven back to X-Plane for a couple of days!

Anyway, I contacted Zendesk and was advised to delete both the usercfg.opt file, and the flightsimulator.cfg file (both residing in the 'LocalCache' folder). Apparantly the [Display] settings in the flightsimulator.cfg file has some references to the specific GPU drivers that are being used.

So I deleted both files, booted up MSFS (which regenerated new versions), reset the settings in MSFS that had been put back to default (it wasn't all settings, just the graphics ones) and I literally have not had a CTD since!    I even went back into the usercfg file and made my preferred adjustments (eg. film grain off) and again, no issues.

So if you change GPU drivers and have problems, make a back up of both of these config files and then delete them. Sure worked miracles for me.

Also

DONT delete your usercfg.opt file.

Open it then delete everything but leave the bottom line. ( if you installed onto your C drive then fine but you should not have done that anyway)

}
InstalledPackagesPath "D:\MSFS"

If you delete the file and its not installed in the default location, MSFS will not see where its installed and will want to download the 127gigs of data.  You can just re-direct it to where its installed and it should not require a re-download.

@Noel I've tried with empty Community folder but, as it is a very random issue, I may fly 4/5 flawless flights and then the issue appears. Considering that the "vanilla" MSFS is absolutely boring with no sophisticated scenery, aircrafts or AI traffic, it becomes very boring to fly without addons.
As for CPU/GPU temps, they seem quite regular. I've already emptied DX and Nvidia cache and already deleted rolling cache.

@Noell I'm on Store version, so don't know if a repair tool exists as for Steam.

@rickjake I'm running FSUPC but without autosave. I'll try what you suggested and report back.

The best 'out of the box' scenery for any flightsim to date and we get this statement. We really seem to HAVE come a long way and our expectations are verging on the untenable.

No offence, mate but, truly, is the default scenery really all that bad (assuming you do have Bing data set to ON in your settings)?
(Here's another thought...you could always also use the Map Enhancement mod and have the latest Bing data in your sim.)

I am not referring to the scenery itself, I know it is stunning. I am just not satisfied by the default airliners (in terms of variety) and by default airports (in terms of quality, exept a few exeptions given with the World Updates).

Did you find a fix? I get lock ups but only when i open another app i.e Spotify, Chrome, etc - never had this issue until recently. Sim will return to normal if i press CTRL ALT DEL then cancel. I had updated my GPU drivers last week, tried going back to previous one but still happens.
