Dog in a Manger?

Hi All,

Recently I was looking around for a smallish regional jet just for short trips around the South Coast of UK using FSX. I came across PMDGs' Bae Jetstream 4100, really neat, well finished and accurate representation.

I searched through PMDGs' website but no reference to any FSX aircraft only MSFS. So I searched online and the only one I could find was on a well known online market place. I bought the product and the install went fine until I came to the validation, I inputted the key and pressed OK and the message came back "key rejected", thinking I must have done something wrong I tried again, same result. At the same time as I cancelled the input page a message appeared, advising me that using the product unverified would cause the product not work correctly, or words to that effect.

I contacted the seller who advised me that he couldn't help as he had received the product through a bereavement. I contacted PMDG (after first registering on their site [apparently this is the only way to contact them]), and was advised that since I had purchased the item second hand that had violated the EULA and there was nothing they could do to help, I asked if I could purchase another key or where I might purchase the whole thing, I was told that as far as my respondent knew nobody was marketing them anymore as FSX was an outdated simulator now.

I was surprised to say the least by the attitude which conveyed, basically, We don't make this anymore, We don't support older Simulators (FS9 FSX) so we're not interested in helping anyone who doesn't use the latest Tech.

Interestingly enough I found this reference to a similar situation on PMDGs' forum, https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/general-discussion-news-and-announcements/217975-registration-key-flight-simulator-x-pmdg-j4100   but when I brought this to the attention of my respondent the reply was, that he had no knowledge of password resets and it was not going to be reset.

The Moral? if there is one I don't know it, the lesson however, if you buy any add-on, download or whatever read the EULA, because if you upgrade to the latest Tech you wont be able to pass on anything you have bought which has a key, certainly not from those curt PMDG people.

regards

mog

How would you read the EULA without launching the installer? 🤔

I guess you used Paypal for purchasing the JS41. You won't have the plane, but at least you may try getting a refund.

Sadly, it's not surprising.

Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

It's not really that weird (at least in my opinion). If they can't support the tech / sim - which typically means, that their technicians and supporters doesn't have the sim installed anymore. If you take money for a product or service, you're also obliged to support it. Since that's not possible, they've deprecated it and won't sell it anymore.

What would be nice, though - again, in my opinion - was that if they cannot support and sell deprecated and/or old products, they could release them as freeware or something like that... But that probably has some legal obstacles to it, I guess...

Or at least a discounted price and a big fat disclaimer. I know Flight1 does something similar.

I've owned this ac for years. I recently built new system and installed FSX again as my fave ac are there, no contest sorry!

This installed and registered fine. It does not WORK but it installs. Steam edition is the issue. It's a very interesting plane that takes a lot of work and effort as well as reading to fly. So there is not a cat in Hells chance you will see it in todays sims.

This is the point at which you should have been asking for your money back.
From the seller.
You were sold a discontinued product from someone who, if the tale is true, was not even the licensee.
Even if they were, it was not theirs to sell.
When you buy software, you do not become the owner of the software, you become licenced to use it,
but the ownership remains with the developer.
Licences are sold to the purchaser and are generally not transferable.
PMDG owe you nothing, as you have not paid them anything and you are not their customer.
Their EULA is a matter of public record: End User License Agreements (pmdg.com)

On a more cheerful note, PayPal, or indeed the "well known online marketplace", may well be able to
refund you at the seller's expense, on the grounds that they sold you something that could not be delivered,
a working copy of the PMDG aircraft model.

Hi Again,

Sorry for the dual topic error.

In all fairness the seller when I advised him of the problem refunded me straight away.

I didn't for one instant believe that PMDG owed me anything, I suppose I rather naively thought that they would revalidate it since they have no further interest in the product or the platform. But it is, as you correctly say, theirs to dispose of as they see fit.
